I just bought a 54 to30, hauled it home, started right up, for a couple days, now wont. i put a new battery, when you turned it over is would just barely crank over, at first more then as you continue it progressively slows to the old click. starter gets very hot. battery is fully charged. ive checked and cleaned all connections in the ignition/starter series. i think its the starter, but before i drop $200 id like to be pretty durn sure. any help is greatly appreciated

How about a little more info? First of all what kind of electrical system do you have, 6V/generator/positive ground (this is the OEM configuration), or 12V/alternator/negative ground (a lot of people replace the OEM configuration with this)? Does your battery match your electrical system in voltage and ground connection? Did the problem start after you replaced the battery?
Have you checked the spark (fat and bluish white) and made sure that you have adequate fuel flow to the carburetor? Is the starter hot from trying to start repeatedly or does it get hot from one or two 10-15 seconds attempts?
Most of the folks on this forum flunked Mind Reading 101 so we have to ask some questions when we get a request like yours.
If it turns out to be the starter, try a local auto electric shop. They will usually test if for free and can replace brushes and clean the commutator up, as well as replace the field coils for less then a "rebuilt" starter from a parts house.

IT IS A 12V SYSTEM, NEGATIVE GROUND.
IT WAS DOING THIS BEFORE I CHANGED THE BATTERY.
I HAVENT CHECKED THE SPARK AND FUEL, I WILL, BUT I DONT THINK IT IS CRANKING ENOUGH TO USE FUEL OR SPARK, I COULD BE WRONG, ITS BARELY EVEN CRANKIN OVER.
IT IS GETTING HOT FROM 1 OR 2 5SECOND CRANKS, IF IT CAN EVEN CRANK THAT LONG.
I APPRECIATE THE HELP

Well Ed, if you're getting 12V to the starter and using 5 seconds cranks and that's getting the starter hot, then I suspect your starter needs to be rebuilt as you oorignialy thought.

Look for an auto electric place and take it in for a test and diagnosis. These are pretty husky starters, originally designed for 6V. Run on 12V they can take a bit of a beating especially if someone gives them long cranks really often.Make sure that you have a good battery ground also. That won't result in a overheated starter but it will cause poor cranking.
