TO20 Brakes

I need some help with determining what may be wrong with the brakes. Brakes on both sides don't work. When the pedal is pressed, the arm running the length of the axle rotates about 1/8 of a turn (maybe less). How much should the arm rotate? Is 1/8 turn acceptable? I'm trying to determine if something is wrong inside the brake assembly or if the brake pedal & control assembly is not set correct, thereby limiting the amount of arm rotation. I get the same rotation when pressing or pulling on the brake pedal.

The amount the cross-shaft on the brakes turns is the amount of free play there is in the linkage before it operates the shoes in the drum. Have you checked if the independent brakes are free, lIFT each pedal in turn and if the rod that runs down the side of the Centre Housing bends then the Joint at the end of the Independent brake pedal is seized and needs to be freed off before the brakes will work correctly. To remove the free play in the brake linkage, disconnect the brake rod and the front end, slacken the lock nut that holds the clevis in position, PULL the brake rod forward to remove the play and adjust the clevis so that the pin will go through easily, this will remove any play, then adjust the brakes by inserting a screwdriver into the slot in the back of the brake-drum, move the handle towards the tractor to tighten then slacken off about 6 clicks each side. If the brakes don't work then, remove the Drum after slackening the adjustment and check the linings for being hard and glazed or covered in oil. If they are glazed you can try to roughen them up a bit so the will bite, if they are covered in oil they will need changing.

I lifted each pedal, in turn, and the rod did not bend. The cross shaft rotated about 1/8 turn, then stopped. The limiting factor on arm rotation appeared to be due to the brake rod not allowing the pedal to travel further. The lever on the part going through the transmission would not allow the brake rod to travel further. Does this make sense? How far should that lever allow the brake rod to travel? It appears to allow the brake rod to travel about two inches (along the center housing), then stops.

Have you tried adjusting the brakes like I described to you. 2" travel on the brake rods is a lot, there is either too much play in the rods or the brake shoes need adjusting in the drums. When the shoes are adjusted correctly very often the rod moves very little, just enough to open the shoes from the rest position. You can tell if the brakes need adjusting from the amount of travel on the main brake pedal, there should be very little movement (maybe 1") when you press it down if it is adjusted correctly. The shoes are adjusted independently of the rods etc. in the drum, all that the rods do is open the shoes to grip the drum. From how you describe it there is a lot of free play in the rods and you need to adjust them to take it out, I described the procedure to you last time, you then need to adjust the brake shoes inside the drum. If you need more info about all this write to me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk.....John
