My TO-30 carries a s/n of TO-80236 which the s/n chart says is a 1952. I found this cast into the left side of the transmission housing:

It looks a little like the date codes on my Ford 850, only backwards. If this is a date code, I'm assuming the C means March, the first 2 means 1952 and the 25 in the middle means the 25th. Is that close or is this not a date code?

I also found what might be dates cast into the back side of the rear axles up near the hubs. They are hard to read, but if I'm seeing them correctly it looks like one is dated late Jan 1952 and the other in Feb 1952.

I did a quick and dirty mathematical breakdown of the serial number and it appears if production was even over the entire year, my s/n would translate to appproximately mid-March. That would make sense if I'm reading the date codes correctly. Any comments or corrections welcome.

The date system used by Detroit was different to UK but it is supposed to be cast into all trumpet housings on Detroit tractors, that is the housing that contains the axle-shafts so Jan and Feb 1952 sound about right. The other number and the assumption that the "C" means March, not so sure about that as usually they took about 4 weeks for the components to be cast then machined and then used, but it isn't impossible I suppose. If that is a date code it can't be when the tractor was made it would only be when that particular component was cast. Production was never even over the year it always varied depending on demand never by a big amount but certainly a couple of thousand or so at times.

Jim,

I believe you are correct about the code on the side of the tranny case. Ferguson had a system where they generally tried to use first in first out for parts so that the production dates generally weren't too far behind the casting dates.
