TO-20 12volt upgrade

Hello I just recently purchased my fathers 1950 To-20 and would like some recommendations on a 12volt conversion upgrade. 1st question is, What are the benifits?
2nd question is, Will the tractor lose any value from the originality of it.

I have a 1950 TO-20 with the original 6v system. If you store it in the open, on a really cold morning it will still start. However if something goes wrong and you have to crank it more than twice the normal amount the starter slows down quite alot.

I have been playing with the idea of putting a solar trickle charger on it to keep the battery optimally charged.

Otherwise, 6v works fine for me here in (mild winter) Virginia.

There is probably no more loaded question than the 6/12 volt debate. 6 volts has worked for years and if you are willing to keep the electrical in tip top shape and the tractor tuned and in good repair it will continue to work.

If you are like me and enjoy the conviences that technology has provided, move to 12 volts. While some folks tend to have an issue or 2 getting it set up the first time once completed some of the benefits are being able to jump start to/from and auto without the additional steps required to safely jump a 6v from a 12v. They start easier, there is more forgiveness in engine tuning for starting, more forgiveness in the battery connections to name a few. I run a 12 volt sprayer for weed control. I've also replaced my gauges with back lit ones so I have gauge lights when pushing snow in the winter at night.

Bottom line is they will run either way, its a matter of choice. I have kept my 6 volt parts in case I want to go back to original some day. I also found an ebay seller thanks to another board member that has replacement field parts for the Generator to convert to 12 volt. His ebay seller id is Triodiode and I called them today and they are very helpful. The other option is to use the GM type replacement alternator and kit form sold here.

I think it is best to make the decision based on what you really intend to do. As Dave says, if you want to use it, go ahead and switch. If you want to sell it as original, keep it 6 volts.
As a side note, if the electrical system is in good shape (clean connections, suitably heavy battery cables, etc), a 6 volt system works just fine.
I think the main reason people switch is cheaper parts availability. 12 volt batteries tend to be cheaper, and they go on sale, and the ubiquitous Delco 10si alternator is much less expensive to repair or replace than the original generator.
And as stated you will get faster cranking out of your starter but if the other systems are properly maintained that shouldn't be a worry anyway.

When I bought my TO20, it was already upgraded to 12 V. It was also switched from positive ground to negative ground. Just like a car basically. It has a Delco 10si Alternator, a 12 V battery, a 12 V ignition coil, and 12V lights. Basically thats all you need. You can continue to use your 6V starter, as long as you dont crank it over for extended periods. The advantages are quicker starts, that 12 V battery really whips that engine over good, especailly in cold weather. Id imagine a better spark would be a gained. As far as Value, if a guy is looking for a Good Ferguson to seriously WORK with it, hed be quite happy with a 12 V conversion, and would not pay any less because of it. BUT, if a collector comes a gandering for a Ferguson in SHOW quality, he may pass yours up or pay less due to it not being OEM original as far as the electrical system. It would cost him money to switch it back, money and time. thats my 2 cents worth

Well thanks all of you for your personal thoughts and information. I will price out an upgrade so see if I want to justify the changeover. I have no problems with the 6v system. I starts up fine, lights are a bit dim but I do not use it at night. Like you all said, as long as I keep it in good shape, connections clean and tight. It should be fine. Thanks again.
