Attempted to brush hog with TO-20 and a 5' Warner?? mower, first the shaft on mower 1-3/8", stub on Ferg. 1-1/8", used adapter sleeve which cracked up. I should probably be looking for a more substantial adapter, or I hear about "over running clutch", my understanding is this clutch prevents your tractor from being pushed by the mower, and can also solve the PTO size difference? Am I on the right track?? Second, the mower sides tends to dig into the ground, (ground is Ozark foothills, where I am mowing is flat)sometimes making wheels spin. I probably don't have the 3-pt adjusted properly, or how can I limit how low the mower will go?? Thanks for any help.

This is the easy way to set up your hog.

connect the hog and raise it up. Place a 4x4 under both front corners. Rest the hog on the 4x4's. Adjust the top link to take up the slack. This is what i do and I never dig. Just engage the pto and slide the lift lever to the down position and start mowing. You may have to do some fine tuning to get your desired height, but this will get you close.

In my opinion, for safety reasons, you shoud NEVER use a rotary cutter without an ORC(over running coupler). It's kinda like a torque check valve that allows the pto to drive the implement but does not allow the implement to drive the pto.The design of the PTO drive ( it's transmission driven so it's always mechanically connected to the driveshaft)is such that it will back drive the rear axle from the rotating inertia of the cutter and drive you into a ditch, tree, fence, etc with one foot holding the clutch pedal down and your other foot trying to brake. And yes they can be had with a 1-1/8" female and and a 1-3/8" male end in case you have the original pto shaft.
I think Gene's reference below will take you to a post by marlowe in the archives on how to set up the hitch to get a pseudo position control to avoid the problem you are having. with controlling the height of the cutter.

the over running clutch is definently worth it. but alot of the heith adjustment problems maybe because your top link isnt adjusted correctly. the to-20's hydrulics can be very tuchy and frustrating if your toplink isnt adjusted right. especially with a bushog.

I saw an over-running clutch at Tractor Supply last Saturday. It was made to fit the older style 1.125" PTO shaft and had a 1.375" outer shaft for connection to the brush cutter. About $57.00 USD. Check this site also - they may have it.

Dick, The over running clutch is one of the best investments you will make for your TO-20! I mowed for years with out one because I thought I could get by without it. Well I did get by, but when ever I got the hog hung,up and it would kill the engine and I couldn't get it out of gear to start it (useally on the back 40!) Then I would have to walk back to the shop and get the jack to get free so I could get out of gear to start up! You can also shift to a higher gear or to reverse with out having to wait for the hog to stop turning before shifting! Not to mention for the safety reasons like being pushed into something! As far as adjustment on your lift make sure your lift arms are level using the crank on the right lift arm. I have a chain on mine for height control, hook the chain from the lower lift points on your hog and go over your top link. Adjust the lenght of the chain so that you obtain the desired height. You can also install a position control on your lift to set a desired height, look for the Zane Thang offered from Zane Sherman.
