If you are referring to the Pertronix Ignitor, the main advantage is that it eliminates the points and condensor, both of which are prone to problems. Further, the Pertronix set up is similar to the more modern and proven design, using a stator, or magnetic pick up, and an armature.
I put one on my TE 20 and it starts as soon as you touch the key.

Dennis, that sounds great as I have had condenser problems in the past. What did it cost you to make the switch? Can the shift lever still be used to start the tractor i.e. turn on the key and then start the tractor by pushing the lever to the "S" position?

I spent around $130 USD for the distributor kit and the proper coil to go with it. I obtained it all from Retro Rockets, on-line.
See John(UK)"s post below for the rest. This changeover has no effect on the starting method.
Please let us all know how this works out for you.

Dennis; I probably will wait until I need a tune up to add the upgraded ignition. We have a 15 mo. old baby and money is tight right now. Thank you both for enlightening me to Pertronix, I really would like to get it. Maybe Santa? Paul F B

I hope you get it as it is worth waiting for, considering all the headaches it will solve. Believe me, I don't miss fooling around with the points when my tractor wouldn't start.
Congrats on the new baby, the number one priority now.

It all fits inside the distributor, you cant see anything of it, just leave out the contacts, condenser and rotor. It's about $90 from this site:-

They do suggest that you fit the coil as well to get the full benefit from the kit (well they would) but those that have fitted them think they are marvellous.
You don't do anything else to the tractor so everything operates as it should.
