I have an alternator on my '51 TO30. It's worked fine until this past week. My amp gauge has started bouncing from 0 to 15-30 and back again every few seconds. The amp needle bouncing is constant while the engine is running no matter for how long. I've cleaned all connections, etc. Any little thing I might be overlooking or is the alternator the likely suspect? The battery seems to be in good shape. Thanks.

I had a voltage regulator do that.

Another possibility is a broken wire or loose connection that makes and breaks from engine vibration. Not just at the battery but also all the charging circuit and at the alternator and regulator. Be sure to check that the grounds on alternator, battery, and regulator are good. Regulators often are mounted on rubber with a little ground strap that could have broken.

Another possibility is that the brushes in the alternator are just about worn as far as they can wear and only make contact part of the time. If they turned the case of the alternator with the brushes up instead of down when testing, that wouldn't show up on the test bench.

You can always remove the alternator and take to a auto shop to have it tested.

Alternator and battery checked out fine at O'Reilly's. Gauge is still jumping; guess I'll see if it's a bad gauge. Thanks.
