In a thread of a couple of days ago I read about this fluid "The right oil to use is TDH (Transmission ,hydraulic, differential)".

I ran across it at a Canadioan Tire store. The lable says it is good for machinery which has a common fluid for the transmission , differential and hydraulic systems. The spec.s suggest it is compliant with GL-5.

Can anyone make me feel comfortable about using this in a TEA20?

Otherwise it will have to be 10w30 motor oil as recommended by John.

Regards
Boyde

Last weekend was browsing the local TSC store. They have 90w, GL-1 oil in 5 gal. pails. It was called mineral oil for Ford Tractor transmissions and hydralics.

I wish I'd have known that. We have a TSC in the next town. Our local farm store didn't have it.

Boyde you can get sae90 gl-1 oil at a massey ferguson dealer it is by agco called gearlube 710/m1103 part #841718m2. Comes in a 9.46liter container. I'm in Peterborough and it sells for $37.99. I found 2containers in the transmission brought the level up to just above the low mark on the dipstick. Hope this helps.

Been using Crappy Tires TDH for years now in all my Masseys, including the old Fergie, no problems yet. Our local dealer recommends Hy-Trans by Agco. The manual states a 80 or 90 weight gear oil. Most stores carry a GL-1, go with that, but my old Fergie runs fine on the TDH from CTC.

Speaking of this, I have read all the threads on the trans fluid in the Fergys, so as not to make the wrong choice I went out to my local Massey Ferguson dealer and said give me the correct oil for my transmission. They said, We use 80-90 in them. I assumed that it was a GL-1 oil, but when I was in the farm store the other day I looked at some 80-90 and it said GL-5. Did they give the wrong stuff? I'm just going to run mine in the summer on tractor rides and odd jobs and was looking for the quietest trans oil.

Irv.

There are two issues we are dealing with here.

1st is the oil thickness or viscosity. That is the rated by the number. i.e. 80, 90 or what ever.

The second is the additatives. That is the GL-1, GL-3, GL-4, or GL-5. All the GL ratings can come in 80-90 weight oil. Two seperate issues.

To further confuse the issue you have two different testing methods for viscosity. One is the Gear oil test i.e GL=Gear lube. This test is done at a cooler temperature then engine oil tests. As your expierance my show oil gets thicker at cooler temperatures. Thus a GL-90 weight can be the same as a 40w in an engine oil test.

Thanks Jeff for the info on that. I called out to the dealership and sure enough that oil is GL-5. I bought it in the bulk so I didn't get to see the barrel it came out of. The mechanic told me they put that in every TO Ferguson that comes through the shop. I quizzed him about the sulphur content having bad effects on brass and he said there's all kind of older trucks out there with brass syncronizers that has 80/90 in them and it doesn't bother them a bit. He said I'd probably never see the day that that would give trouble. I knew at the time I should have asked, but you hate to second guess the dealer. Thats why I went there, to get the right stuff.

The dilema is what do I do now? That was 6 gallons at 12.80 a gallon total $76.80

As Jeff says, that TDH is completely wrong for the Ferguson tractor, no matter what Canadian Tyre might tell you. You can use GL1 90W or 15W-30 Multi-grade....Multi-grade will not be as thick as GL1 in very cold temperatures, so it will be useful in Canada.

You should NOT use this oil in a TEA. The GL-5 spec. oil has additives in it to withstand extreem pressures in modern gears. Specificly sulpher.

Sulpher may attack and corrode the "yellow" metals used in the TEA transmission. You want GL-1 spec oil. NAPA has this under part number 65-205.
