The PTO seal was leaking so I decieded to replace prior to re-filling the hydro system. Shop manual says to remove 4 bolts, and slide shaft out by hand. Well, that didn't happen. Shaft will move about 1 1/2". The book says the shaft may be twisted or bent. Preparing to split the tractor now. Should I rebuild the pump while I have the tractor split apart? Restoration projects are fun because there is not a time schedule. If this was to happen on one of my tractors when I was farming, it would have drove me nuts!

With this method, can the bearing be replaced without removing the shaft? Thanks for your input. I have not split the tractor yet, but I sure have a bunch of parts removed in preparation. That's OK though, makes them alot easier to sand blast for repaint.

yes you sure can, you will have the entire bearing housing in your hands, take it over to the bench and remove it, you dont need to take out the pto shaft. Should take about 1 hour.

Wait! the rear of that thing has 4 bolts that hold the pto saft housing and bearing and seal. take off the pto shaft cover. You will find a c-clip type fastener, remove it. take out the 4 bolts and leave the pto shaft in the pump. change your seal and new gasket and reassemble and re-fill. And dont forget about the c-clip,

If the Pump works ok why rebuild it, if it doesn't then you will have to rebuild. Check it before you strip the tractor down.
