TO35 starting

My brother-in-law has a 1959 TO35 with a standard 4 cyl. diesel engine. I have metered the glowplugs and #3 is open. We can pull the tractor and it will finally start. He can leave it running for an hour, shut it off and immediately try to start it with the starter, hot battery. It will not start. Has to be pulled again Could low compression cause this? How do you check compression on a diesel? Thanks

We have several of the TO35s with the Standard diesel and I have had a similar problem with one of them. The problems could be twofold. Compression could be a factor in that low compression is not a friend to these engines. I have found that on one of my engines, the valves had been ground so far into the head that it significantly lowered the compression. If you do the math (geometry) Valves that are worn/ground so that they are recessed .110" into the head will lower the compression ratio from the factory 20:1 to 18:1. The book calles for .040" to a max of .100" I think that in this engine this is significant. With the glow plug type engine, you can make an adapter on a small lathe to connect a compression tester but I don't think that the numbers that you get are going to be that significant because there are no real numbers published. They maybe helpful in comaring cyl to cyl. Also, variations in cranking speed dramatically effect the higher compression engines. So it is difficult to accurately compar tractor to tractor. Another possible cause could be your injection system. Air leaks, worn out pump and injectors can contribute to your starting problems. I just overhauled the engine that we had that acted like yours and I can't say that I found any one cause of the problems that I had before but it seems to run and start much better now. I did not overhaul the injection pump but I did have my nozzles cleaned and tested. I have new sleeves and pistons and had the head surfaced and valves ground. I also created some adapters to fit glow plugs from the early GM automotive diesels. These glow plugs act faster and they stick farther into the injection chambers. So far they work great! I am waiting for it to get really cold to give this engine a real test. It would never start with the battery before with temps below about 40degF. I think that this will be much improved. As for your engine, I would start with the injection system. Good luck

as stated i cant find any published compression pressure data on this engine,but almost any diesel needs to produce 275 to 300 lbs to begin combustion.the injection pump is actually two pumps,right under the head,where the fuel goes in,there is a small vane pump and if it doesnt work properly the engine will not start at cranking speed but will at pulling speed.i overhauled ne that the owner installed an electric pump ahead of the injection pump to overcome this situation
