Removing hydraulic pump on TO20

I drained the hydraulic fluid from my TO20 and noticed that there was a ton of sludge inside. The lift was getting weak and since there was so much sludge I wanted to remove the pump and clean everything and rebuild the pump while I was at it.

I"ve got the info on rebuilding the pump but I can"t seem to find instructions on how to remove the pump from the tractor itself.

Anybody have this info or know where I can get it

Really before attempting to remove the Pump you should have run some tests to find out why it was losing power, not much you can do to find that with it on the bench, apart from replace a lot of parts and hope that cures it. If you need information just email me at:-

Actually I think that's it all the sludge keeping the hydraulic fluid from reaching the pump. At least that's what I'm hoping, not really looking forward to rebuilding the pump. Is there anyway to flush the system really good. I considered draining the fluid and putting some kerosine or diesel in it and letting it run for a couple minutes. Any suggestions

The oil in the Hydraulic system covers the pump if the level is correct, the Control Valve is at the bottom near the drain plug, so really unless you have a vast amount of sludge in there to a great depth,there should be no problem in the Pump sucking oil. If you can discharge the safety valve the blast pressure will clean the area around the control valve. Try moving the Control Fork by hand with the engine running and the PTO in gear,move the fork towards the Pump gently and it may free off, it could be just the Control Valve is stuck, they do this occasionally, usually due to a wear ridge forming on the body of the valve. Once it is free it should be ok. The problem with flushing the Pump housing is that the best way is to work the tractor with a detergent oil in it that will loosen all the sludge in there BUT the problem is that it will draw it in through the Pump which will do it no good at all. Try freeing the Control Valve first, if you have difficulty, drain the oil and remove the large drain plug underneath, this is directly below the Control Valve, if you can reach in there through this plug hole you may be able to free it off as you can get a little more effort on the valve but don't overdo the effort or you may break the pintle on the Control Valve. If this fails then drop the Pump out and wash out the interior of the housing, you can then also clean up the Pump itself without dismantling it. That isn't enough, it is the sludge that is stuck to the inside of the housings that you need to clean off, the moving parts of the Pump wont clean up so quickly. Various people have different ideas on how to do this job. Like remove the PTO shaft and the side covers and spray the inside with diesel or some such to loosen the crap, allow it to drain out and then mop it out with paper towelling through the sides and the rear housings. Running the Pump with little lubrication will not do it much good. Sorry there is no easy way to do this. If the oil is changed every 12 months this crap will not form.

Drain the fluid. Pull the PTO shaft by removing the 4 bolts from the PTO shaft housing. The shaft should slide right out. Take both side covers off the center housing. Working thru the side covers disconnect linkage. You do not need tools to disconnect linkage. Remove the pump bolts and it is ready to drop. The thing I have problems with is the linkage. I struggled reconecting the linkage for an hourish on night. The wife came out to mess with me, hooked the linkage right up. Smaller hands.
