I overhauled my TO-20 and want to know how to set the timing>

Your TO-20 has an initial timing of 7o BTDC. You first have to get the #1 piston on the compression stroke. You can do this by removing the #1 spark plug, holding your finger over the spark plug hole while somebody taps the starter. When you feel the pressure trying to blow your finger off the spark plug hole, you're on the compression stroke.Underneath the starter, there's a hole that you can observe the face of the flywheel. Gently tap the starter until you see the timing marks. Again gently tap the starter, or better yet, put a wrench on the crank pulley nut and rotate the engine to 7o BTDC mark. Your distributor rotor should be pointing to the #1 plug terminal.
Loosen the distributor clamp bolt,turn on the key, put a paperclip or bent wire in the #1 spark plug boot. Hold thspark plug boot/paperclip near a good ground and slowly rotae the distributor back and forth. Whenyou hear the crack of the sprk firing, that's the static timing point. It may take a couple of tries to get it right but when you feel you do, tighten down the clamp bolt and start it up. Check it with a timing light and also check the advance mechanism function. At 1000 rpm, the timing should advance to 21o BTDC and at 2000 rpm it should be at 31o BTDC
