my hydraulics quit after i removed the plate under the seat. if that's what you had apart, that long fork that drops down in the sump actually connects to something down there. I removed the round cover on the side and was able to re-attach it (it basically snaps together) I don't know if there is an easy way, it's a tight fit for your hands, and the oil smell lasts a while!

If the oil smells like you say it is old and should be replaced (actually every 12 months)with GL1 90W or 15W -30 Multi-grade if you are in a cold climate. Drain from all THREE oil drain plugs when the oil is HOT or you will not get all the oil out, it takes 5 galls (UK) or 24 Quarts (US) and fill through the filler plug near the transmission lever, it will take at least 30 mins or more to level out, depending on the temperature, so just fill with correct amount and leave it, you can use the tractor straight away. GL1 90W is about as thick as engine oil NOT like gear oil as the number suggests. If it has gear oil in the Hydraulics now that could also be another reason that it smells like you say.

Make sure you engage the PTO because that drives the hydraulic pump. There's a lever on the left side of the transmission case that you move forward to engage the pto.

Well you don't say what you have done or why you had to strip it down. If you give us some idea of what you have done to it maybe we can tell you or at least point you in the right direction. If you email me at:-
fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk I will be able to send you the information you may need after reading what you have done to it.

Hydraulic oil is far too thin for these hydraulics, plus it has to lubricate the gearbox and the rear axle. You say you heard major crunching noise and you fitted a new cover the seat bolts on, I take that to mean the Hydraulic Lift cover, if you had to replace that because the original one was damaged then most likely broken parts of the original one have dropped straight down into the pump and the that is damaged now. You need to check inside to see just what is happening. If you email me at:-
fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk tell me exactly what has happened and what you have done, I will send you the information you need plus any comments I have about your problem. But do tell me why you had to replace the "plate" the seat fastens to.....John
