Tie Rod Boot Replacement - TO-30

Got another question about the front end on my tractor. This site advertises a tie rod boot assortment. The ball joints on mine (front and rear) are nice and snug but the boots are practically non-existent (dry rot I suppose). Has anyone ever replaced the boots? My service manual doesn't seem to even mention a replacement procedure. How difficult are the boots to replace?

Hi K.E.,

FWIW, I replaced the ends on my tractor a couple of years ago and the new rubber boots were only about a year old when they started to break down and fall apart. Inferior quality to be sure. If I do this again, I'll check to see if better quality ones are available...

John, thanks for the reply. The rear ones are off already due to the engine rebuild, and I have no doubt I'll be able to get the front tie rods off. 50+ years of grease and ?? made me wonder if I even wanted to touch them. Thanks to your advice, I'll be getting real dirty soon trying to replace the boots. Thanks again

Quite easy to replace, hardest job is getting the joint out of the arm. to do that hit the arm with a hammer to shock the taper on the joint, it will jump out then. You could say they are a bit fiddly to fit, but with patience they are no problem.
