Oil pressure guage

I am having trouble getting an oil pressure guage to work. The old guage did not work (or I have no oil pressure) when I bought it. I replaced the guage - still no pressure. I removed pressure guage oil line and fitting and cleaned and I can easily blow air through. While off I cranked the motor over and oil does come out the hole in the block where the oil pressure line fitting screws in. Re-assembled. Wide open throttle got 5 lbs but otherwise zero. Engine does not tick or get hot. There is a 3/4" pipe coupling on the back of the guage and then a reducing brass fitting to get to the right size and gender for the oil line fitting. Could that make it read wrong. How else can I diagnose the problem?

I once bought a pig in a poke TO-20, bought it home and put on a set of sparkplug wires and exhaust and fired it up. Motor sounded real good and as I walked around the tractor, I finally looked at the guages and lo and behold...no oil pressure reading. I knew better than that cause it was running too smooth...had been running for five minutes by that time. So, I took out my trusty 6" crescent wrench and whacked her under the dash below the guage and she jumped right up to 30 lbs. Did that for the next 10 startups and she gave in and did it on her own after that. Life is good. Fred OH

I had a problem like that on a Ferguson with very low oil pressure and I found that the pressure relief on the oil pump was stuck open. I loosened it up so that it worked properly and the pressure came up to 30 psi. This happened on an oil pump that had been sitting around for awhile.

I would not run without good pressure I bought a TO35 that had low pressure it took out the top end the rocker arms and shaft were junk .I would pull the pan and check the pump rod&main brgs good luck

Slacken the pipe coupling off at the back of the gauge with the engine running, that will vent the air and let you see if oil is actually coming up the pipe, even if the pressure is low. The only other thing you can do then is make sure that the gauge is reading correctly.

Can you tell me what is involved in changeing the oil pump. I see a specialized tool is available for the alignment. Is that needed and what would be the procedure.

I posted a reply on oil pump rebuilding a couple weeks back. The short version- you can rebuild your oil pump with a ~$36 rebuild kit (sold here)without that special tool, with a couple precautions.

I'm going to try posting a link to that thread a couple weeks back..... here goes....

If it is getting oil and not leaking, the size (or length) of the fittings will not change a reading... it might make the time response delayed (if it has to fill up with oil to compress space/air) but it will read correctly. Either the guage is bad or the reading is correct. 5 psi is a little low but it wouldn't be the first one that was that low and continued to work. Mine was 10 psi on a tired original engine but there were no scored or damaged parts... Jim

I meant to say a 3/4" long pipe coupling not 3/4" diameter pipe coupling.
