I have the alternator the Delco 10 SI.

I have ordered the universal bracket.

Three questions for planning purposes.
1. Will I need to change the pulley on the alternator?

2. If I need to change the pulley will I have any problem getting the nut onto the alternator shaft?

3. Will I have to change the belt to a longer one?

(that last one, if I have to change the belt, will be a long change, because I will have to take the front loader off first, and I have not figured out how to do that yet.)

Thanks
Boyde

Randy, I am in Brampton Ontario Canada, no I do not have an tach attached to the generator. What did you mean no problem with the belt width? Did you use the wide belt on the narroer alternator pulley?

Old, the pulley I have on the alternator is narrow, while the fan belt is wide did this not cause you some problems?

Gerald, what size pulley did you put on your alternator?

Thanks guys. I am having fun with this tractor, my wife thinks I am cute when she sees me out in the field riding my tractor.

Its 8 miles away and its been 3 or four years since I did it. It was the smallest wide pulley in the parts catalog the local auto electric shop had. Took a few days. Has worked fine ever since.

It was probably 2" or a little under 2" OD.

If you use the original generator pulley that fits the belt width, you will need a longer belt because the alternator is fatter than the generator, and then the alternator will run slower than optimum. A good automotive electric shop can find a small diameter alternator pulley and change it for you. Its easiest with an impact wrench. I had that done when I had them build up a 10SI for my JD. Then the original belt fit just fine.

No problem with the belt width, not sure on length. Here"s a tip. Once you get it mounted and set the way you want, take the alternator off and take the bracket off the engine, making sure not to change anything, and get it welded together. It will eliminate the bolts holding it together, make it so it won"t come apart, and look neater and tidier.
Do you have a tach, and does it run from a cable from the generator? You"re from Brampton, Ontario? Sarnia guy here.

I've never done one on a tractor like the one you have but most of the time you can still use the belt you have if you mount the alternator the right way. Also the pulley on the alternator should work just fine I have only change one pulley in all the 12 volt convertions I have ever done and I have done 10 plus of them on most color tractors.

So far it never has it justs rides higher on the pulley and help a little as far as the chargeing out put of the alternator becuase it spins a little fast.

Thanks Old.

I am running through my head the part you said about it running a little faster with the belt riding higher in the pulley. My rememberance of pulley theory, and I am old as well, so I am probably remembering wrong, is that a large pulley on the drive mechanism and a small pulley on a device (say an alternator) results in the device revolving faster than the drive pulley.

If that is somewhat correct then having the belt ride higher should result in the alternator revolving a tad slower?

Regardless, you have no problems using the wide belt with the narrow pulley. Thank you, I have an option I had not considered before.

Regards
Boyde

Ya I think your right I was thinking back wards but the big thing is the pulley will still work LOL. I thought about the sprocket on a 10 spped bike and yep you got me on that one LOL
