I just purchased a tractor yesterday that the owner said is a Massey Ferguson 35. The serial # is 160402 which indicates it's a Harry Ferguson T0 35. The motor tag is Z134-612132. There are MHF and HF casting numbers. The front axle has HF casting marks and the rest are MHF marks. Is this a transitional tractor? And what are the proper colors? It's currently painted red/sheet metal and gray/silver/ on chassis. Thanks for any feedback.

For curiosity I checked my TO35 #156213 and all the prominent cast parts are stamped HF and the serial number plate on the dash says Massey-Harris-Ferguson Co. Racine, Wisconsin at the bottom.

Harry Ferguson never made the TO35 or the FE35 either it was Massey-Harris-Ferguson who made both of them from 1953. In fact the last of the TO30's were made by MHF. Harry Ferguson quit before they were in production. The name of the company changed although Harry Ferguson was still there as a consultant. One reason HF quit was because of the TO35 being chosen for production over his TX60 tractor that was also under development. Doesn't really matter about casting numbers they are only there for the factory's use and are not part numbers for the customer. You can have a casting with a given number cast on it but once it is machined it will have a part number, maybe more depending on how many variations of a particular part there are, but they could all start off with the same single basic casting.

As Drex said, it could have a different color paint underneath. When repainting was necessary, often it was done with the current color, rather than the original, as of course the current color was more handily available, especially if the dealer was involved. It is a transitional tractor, as you said, and a good one. It came in Special or Deluxe. The Deluxe often had a two stage clutch, giving you live PTO.

Sounds like its the same as mine, which is a 1955 TO 35. I bought it as a Massey Ferguson 35, painted red and silver with the proper decals, but where the paint is chipped off you can see the gray(sheet metal) and dark green (castings). The paint schemes and codes can be found at www.fergusonenthusiasts.com Good luck.
