Hello all. I am new to site, having purchased a TO30
in fair condition , I was using a brush hog and ran over a rubber tire in the feild, shortly after It started having problems engaging the pto, then the shifter shaft pretty much frooze in place.
reading the other post about pto lead me to split the tractor and look the shaft does not look bent or twisted but will only move about 1/2 inch when I try to remove it, the shifter now moves back and forth the coupling gears look ok, I guess what I am asking is should I cut the shaft to remove it or look for something else, you know money grows on trees here, haha
any help will be greatly appreciated
Brad

Thanks John, I cannot remove the shaft from the rear
it moves less than 1/2 inch, so in the morning I will get the cut off wheel going and get the shaft replaced. the orc seems to be working does it help with this type of problem and if not do I need to replace it with the new shaft,
again thanks for the help, Brad

No safety feature??? in reply to Brad Tetrick, 06-22-2006 12:46:42
Can"t help you with your problem directly, but wouldn"t ya think there would be a specific weak piece, such as a sheer pin for example, that would indeed sheer off prior to causing more extensive damage? Maybe somebody eliminated this on your tractor? Sometimes a welder fixes stuff which is not intended to be fixed.

How about other PTO drivin impliments? Isin"t there any safety feature I described above built into them? Reason I am asking, is I never really used the pto output on my tractor yet and where I intend to brush hog, I have many rocks.

If there are a lot of rocks as you say you can't set the mower too low, it is made for cutting grass only and continually hitting rocks will seriously damage it and possibly the tractor too. It wont matter if you have a clutch fitted or not, the momentum of the mower blades at cutting speed when it strikes a rock can cause all kinds of problems. If you want to cut low you have to clear the rocks. Not good news and probably not welcome either but it is true.

You can bet your boots it is twisted when the selector wont move. just try pulling out of the back of the tractor, that will confirm it. You can get a new shaft from Sparex part number S280, this is the complete thing but with 1-3/8" 6 spline shaft. Order from your local tractor dealer. You will also need S60456 PTO cap and S61322 gasket. Yes you have to cut it out, just make sure to wash the housing out thoroughly or it will all go through the Pump and make a total hash of it.
