TO35 Is the Continental Engine THAT bad?

I have the opportunity to purchase a clean TO35 Standard. It has been overhauled professionally some 5-6 years ago. Also, the hydraulics were gone through at the same time. The tractor has been used very little since then (<200 hrs.) My fear after reading several discussions on the Ferguson and, talking to a local tractor mechanic is the engine. Is the engine such a devastating problem? Cracked block syndrome scares me. I would be using the tractor for relatively light duty applications(corrugating, ditching and blading). I've heard that parts are extremely expensive, the engines are no good and that one should just stay away from the Continental engine. This would be my first tractor and I don't want to get into something that I will regret!

Chuck - I think you are overly concerned about the Continental Z134 gas engine in the TO-35. Yes, there were problems with the Z120 and the Z129 engines but less problems with the 134. Part of the problem stems from people not properly taking care of their engines. Some people let their engines overheat, sometimes caused by a plugged-up or chaffed-up radiator. Some didn't have proper levels of antifreeze protection. Some owners even put thermostats in backwards! Those engines were not very forgiving if not properly cared for. I have a TO-35 and an F-40, both with the Z134 engine.I think it is a good engine. With proper care, it will last for years. There are still thousands of Fergusons tractors with Continental engines out there in daily use. So relax and just enjoy your tractor!

My 55 TO 35 has about 12000 hours on it's Z134, and it has never been opened up(previous owner thinks he might have adjusted the valves once...), I am going to re-build it, as it has a hard time running on all 4 cyls with the amount of oil it burns, and it really needs some TLC, I haven't done much work to it since I painted it 3 years ago.
