Got a TO-20 and pulled out a Napa Gold 1107 filter.
Put in a new Napa filter 551107.
The old filter had recessess on both ends. This new filter is flush on both ends and no room for the spring. Is Napa full of it saying this 551107 is the correct filter? What do you experts use for a filter?
Thanks much!
Bruce

Looks like I may have had the wrong filter also...
Went to Napa and the picture was that of a metal encased filter element, the same as I removed from the engine. The replacement filter was a paper housing and just a bit longer than the metral filter...
tomorrow morning will find out if the filter has been updated...
I still get to puill a pan, but at least can use it before I tear it apart...

Bruce,
the spring actually goes above the steel can filter cover that is still in your oil pan. It doesn't go between the filter and the screen, or the filter and the pan, or the screen and the cover. Those are all common, but incorrect installations. You may actually already have a spring properly installed, plus the extra spring that was inproperly installed, thus making a tight fit. Push up on your steel can filter cover that is still in the oil pan and see if you have resistance that might suggest you already have a spring correctly installed up there. If the filter cover just rattles around on the down pipe, you probably don't have the spring up there, where it belongs, and you need to install the one you have up there (means dropping the oil pan).
Also, the screen, and I think the filter, are actually taller than your steel can cover in the oil pan, so when you install the screen& filter it pushes-up on the steel cover. If you cover is a bit cocked and jambed, it may not slide up the down pipe to give you the clearance you need to get the screen and filter in there. Might need to wiggle the cover to make sure it pushes up.
It should not matter if the filter has a recess or not, don't need one, as the spring don't belong there. The filters I use (not NAPA) are not recessed. I have used Napa 1107's several times, I know that is the right filter. Is your new filter physically the same height as the old filter? Maybe the NAPA guy gave you a 1107 box with something else inside? Has happened to me in the past.
Don't forget to use a new rubber gasket on the cover plate

George
