Hello, I just bought a TO35 diesel. The serial number plate on the dash is gone. I don't know if the serial number will ever be required as far as obtaining parts, or if all of them with this engine (Standard) were the same. I found an earlier post that the manufacture date of the engine is on the block above the starter, I tried that but can't make mine out, even tried paper and rubbing with a pencil. Are there any other numbers on the tractor that would tell what year it was built? Any advice will be greatly appreciated, Brian

The engine number is stamped in the block above the generator and has a prefix of SJ ****E
On some tractors the serial number is also stamped in the rear gutter on the fuel tank and on the flat top of the gearbox alongside the oil filler. The prefix would be SDM or SDF. You may find a date cast into the centre axle housing below the seat just forward of the round inspection hatch. 11 4 7 would be 4th Nov 1957 they sometimes have a date cast into the axle trumpet housings too. There are no dates for build on the engines or the tractors, any dates will be cast into the housings and are dates when the housings were actually cast, they would be used in assembly usually within about 4 weeks but in the case of the engines in the TO35 it would be a lot longer since they were built in UK and shipped out to US and then fitted into the tractors.

John, I appreciate the advice. I got the engine serial #, it is SJ60071 with what appears to be an L at the end. I couldn't find one on the tank or by the transmission fill hole. I am not even sure now that it is a TO35, it has FE35 on the tachometer. The sides of the hood have Massey Ferguson 35 on them and by looking at the paint if it is not original it has been on a long time. It doesn't appear to have glow plugs for each cylinder, just some sort of heater in the manifold that has a fuel line going to it as well. The air cleaner cup is missing on it, my Massey dealer says it is NLA.. I haven't been able to find one on the net.. Is there anyone who might have one? Thank you again for your time.

Hi Brian, The suffix letter would be "E" not "L" "E" = England as opposed to some stamped "F" = France. If it was an FE35 it should have a different hood to a TO35, the TO35 hood looks very like the TO20 & 30. Not all the 23c engines had glow plugs in the cylinder head, that only came with later versions, the early ones had a "Thermostart" in the inlet manifold which is a heater that has a fuel line to it and when you turn the engine over after using the heater it feeds fuel to the hot heater which bursts into flame and that is drawn into the cylinders to help it to start. The Air Filter Cup, You may like to try a breakers yard for that, Sparex do a complete Air Filter part number S42747, you would have to order it through your local Sparex dealer, to check who that is email: [email protected] No problem about the time, mail anytime....John
