TO-20 Oil leak

A few weeks ago I posted this message....
I mowed grass last week for about three hours and afterwards I went to check the engine oil and found that the dipstick was dry, so after adding 4 quarts that took it back to the level it was at before I started mowing about one fourth of the way up the safe level. I still have not determined where 4 quarts of oil got off to but I was thinking possibly blow by from the blow by tube, I rebuilt the entire engine two years ago so I would have to assume that there is no blockage in the engine but is there an air inlet somewhere on the intake manifold that could be clogged. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I mowed again today and it didnt take long to notice oil coming from the little drain in the bell housing so as it was posted in a reply that would mean my rear main seal or my camshaft plug were leaking, how dificult a job is it to fix and what does it involve.

The ammount oil you said you were using (loosing) in your original post had to be going somewhere and it looks like you found it! You'll have to split the tractor if it's the welsh plug at the back of the cam. I'm not sure that you have to for the rear main seal however. The manual doesn't say whether or not it can bedone without splitting. Maybe John(UK) or one of the other guys will be able to advise you about that. If you don't have Ferguson Shop Manual, get one before you split the tractor. There is some valuable info about how to do that withouthaving some problems. Thanks for getting back to the forum.. I don"t think you will be so lucky as to have just a pan gasket leak. Losing a gallon in three hours (like you posted before) suggests to me that it is coming from a bountiful source. The little bit of seepage that you are likely to get at a pan does not seem likely to me. IT might be worth it to reseal the pan since it is easy, but I"ll put my money on a leaking rear seal (or the camshaft plug). In either case you are looking at splitting the tractor... not that hard, but needs lifting equipment, jacks, etc (and the books to give direction)... JIm

Just out of curiosity the oil is leaking from over the top of the inspection cover which cover the flywheel as well as the drain in the bellhousing which makes me ask, could the back side of the oil pan gasket be leaking....WOW!! could I get so lucky as to just have to replace that??
