I'm not sure if my last post was the lost email John(UK) refered to or not... Since I did post a problem earlier today and didn't see it show up on the board, here it is again...

I bought a TO-20 for parts (particularly the crankshaft) for fixing up another one. I'm having a devil of a time trying to get the engine split from the tranny. It looks as if the tractor was parked in a swamp for the last 30 years. The clutch assembly is very rusted and siezed. After much prying, pounding, wedging etc., I managed to seperate the engine and tranny about half to three quarters of an inch. It won't budge any further. I took the starter switch plate off so I could look (and pound with a rod) down inside the clutch housing. I can wobble the engine and watch the flywheel/clutch assembly move while the throwout bearing stays solid with the tranny shaft. So for my questions:

Is there anything mechanically in the clutch housing that could have broke in such a way as to prevent the engine from seperating from the tranny? In other words, am I for sure just fighting rust or could there be something else?

Is it possible to lift the engine block off the crankshaft without disconnecting the flywheel from the crankshaft?

Is there anything I can do to allow the tranny output shaft to slide out of the tranny and allow me to seperate the engine with the tranny shaft attached to the clutch?

Are there any other tricks (besides dynamite - yet) to seperating the engine? I'm afraid I might break the engine block if I keep pounding wedges down in there.

Yes, among other things... It was so messy in there that it's hard to say what was rusted to what. The clutch plates/pads were rusted clear through in most spots and just flaked away when I took it off the flywheel. I only found one little fragment of the pedal return springs - the rest were rusted gone. I think the only thing in there with enough metal left is the flywheel... but someone welded the ring gear onto it. Is that common? I've only replaced one ring gear before but I remember heating it and letting it slip over the flywheel for a preasure fit.

Welding a ring gear on to the flywheel is a common fix and in my experience is not a good one. The early Ferguson had a design error on the the flywheel, the ring gear being sweated on from the rear of the flywheel. Eventually the starter drove it off the fly wheel. Ferguson made a design change early on (they machined a lip at the back of the flywheel and sweated the flywheel on from the front) but I guess the folks that had the problem welded them back on the flywheel. It takes some one who know what they're doing to weld steel to a white cast iron flywheel and most of the folks who did this didn't do it right.(I had one of these on my TO-30!)

Also, after removing the steering box... a few whacks on the shaft while pulling on the engine, may work too.. Jim

Jim's idea of removing the steering box may allow you access to the prssure plate bolts and if you can rotate the engine (or are the luckiest guy in the world and the flywheel is in a position where you can access the six bolts), you might be able to disconnect the pressure plate . That would allow the engine to come off. Access by this rout could also let you get a bunch of penetrant on the input shaft to attempt loosening the clutch hub from the splines.

After looking at my disassembled tractor, I"d say that you could sacrifice the input shaft and get it out. If you take the steering box off, you can cut the input shaft (torch or 4" angle grinder). It is still weakly attached with some springs but it looks to me like you can get it out. Also, with the steering box removed, you may be able to get at the bolts of the input shaft to the transmission and pull everything out... I think that it is worth trying.. Keep us informed... I could learn from this too.. Jim

I finally got it!!! I started out by trying to remove the engine from the crank. I got everthing off but the rear seal. There are three bolts that hold it to the block from the tranny side that I couldn't get to. I'm sure it would have come if I could cut off the bottom half of the seal but I decided not to risk damage to my 'new' crank. In hind sight (and as gerard pointed out), it wouldn't have done much good anyway. The crank would have still been stuck to the flywheel with no way to get at the bolts.

It finally dawned on me too (like Jim) that I should remove the steering box. That opened up a hole big enough to do some more pounding. I tried to get (some) of the clutch bolts off but could only see three of the six. All three bolt heads were rusted round so a wrench wouldn't work on them. I ended up cutting all six bolt heads off later with a cold chisel.

Anyway, removing the steering box opened up a hole just big enough to get a bottle jack sideways in there between the tranny casting and the clutch. It still wasn't easy and took several attempts and several different sized steel blocks (because the jack would only move about 2 inches laying on its side) but it finally came off.

Also, I should point out that this tractor probably wasn't parked in a swamp like I first thought. The entire bell housing was packed full (and I mean right full) of mouse droppings/grain/nesting/mud etc. Someone made an access hole when they took the starter switch off and mounted it to the battery holder (presumably because the starter rod from the tranny broke). It really stunk in there. I really believe that mouse urine causes more damaging rust than regular water does. So don't leave any mouse holes in equipment left in the field...

Thanks again for all the help & suggestions! Now I can finally get back to work on my original tractor...

If you haven't had a reply from me to your mail then it must have been yours that got lost Mike, because as of last night all mail sent to me had been answered. It's totally unorthodox to do it but if there is no other way then you could remove the timing cover and oil pan and then detach con-rods and main bearing caps and then possibly you could get the block away from the crank. Never tried it of course but been thinking about it for a while and can't think of anything that may stop you from doing it. It's as Jerry says, it will be stuck on the splines through the clutch plate most probably, they could do this when they were in constant use so if it has been lying for X years then it has no chance. Sorry for the delay in replying, hottest day we have had so far and we get a power cut and we very rarely get them.

Like John, had been thinking about this and can"t see why one shouldn"t strip engine around crank. Might have hassle undoing rear main oil seal, but having got to crank, can"t see how that would help you get it free. Hence I didn"t offer the info! I"d keep trying to wedge it apart, carefully keeping it square. I might even consider drilling a 1/2" hole in bellhousing to enable the spline to be sprayed with releasing oil.

You say you can get nearly an inch of clearance side to side. Can you see the heads of the bolts that attach the pressure plate to the flywheel? If it is a parts tractor, torch off the heads of the bolts, usually six. Leave the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc attached to the tranny input.

Watch out from fire inside the housing.

You have dsconnected the the radius arms and the steering links from the transmission case and steering arms haven't you?

Yes the radius arms and steering links (in fact the whole front end) are off. That's a whole 'nother story. The oil pan is off. The whole oil filter plate was missing so there was no oil in there but there was oil still dripping from the rods and main bearings so it looks like it had oil very recently. Things actually look pretty good in there.

I still wonder if there might be something besides rust because of how much I am able to wobble the motor. With the weight of the motor hanging from my shop crane, I can push it from side to side quite easily by hand. When I do this, I can get about an inch of seperation (between motor and clutch housing) on one side of the motor before the other side touches and vice versa. I doesn't seem like there should be that much side to side motion if the shaft was still engaging the clutch. At least when assembling the motor to the tranny, I seem to remember having to get them aligned fairly straight before they would slide together.

I'll try some WD-40 in there. I don't know if I can get it down in far enough to do any good though. I wish I could seal the whole clutch housing up enough to fill with diesel and let it sit but it would just drain out from under the flywheel. I'm going to push my pride aside for a moment and confess that I shoved the garden hose down the starter switch hole and let it flush for about half an hour with water. I didn't see how I could do any more water damage. I hoped the water would soften the rust up enough to let me break it free. All it did was make a huge mess in my driveway. Which reminds me, I should open the tranny drain plug and let any water out that went by the shaft seal...

So, is there no hope at all of undoing all the bearing caps from the crankshaft and lifting the whole block off the crankshaft? The rear crank seal housing can be unbolted from the block from inside to allow the block to be lifted away but I don't remember how the front of the crank fits into the block - through a hole in the block or can the bearing housing be undone like the back?

The trnsmission input shaft is probably rusted to the clutch splines or the tip of the shaft is rusted to the pilot bearing or both. Don't use anymore wedges or leverage or you're likely to break a casting. If it's a parts tractor spray some diesel or pentrating oil in the area of the input shaft/clutch splines and wait. You might be able to wangle a garden sprayer tip in the opening and spray it real good. Don't be in a hurry and if you're patient if might break free after a while. I don't know of any way of getting the flywheel off without removing the clutch/pressure plate and you can't get to that without splitting the tractor. Can you get the pan off? It might help you get some more penetrant up there.
