TO-30 Draft control w/ PHD

First I'd like to thank everyone for the wealth of information I have to draw from on this site, I have used it often and only wish I was knowledgable enough to offer something back. My question concerns using a PHD with my TO-30. I don't know how to keep it from creeping down between holes. I read Marlowes set up for brush hogs which saved me from making the same mistake as others (Thanks Marlowe). But without a top link to apply back pressure I don't know how to set up for the PHD. Any information or suggestions would be appreaciated. Thanks.

I'm assuming you are refering to the PHD drifting down with the PTO level OFF, so the auger does not keep spinning while transporting to the next hole?

Can't do much about that, the lift hydraulics are run by the PTO. If your hydraulics are in reasonable condition, you should get ~5-10 minutes hang time with the PTO disengaged before the auger drops enough to hit the ground.

For transporting your PHD, disconnect the drive shaft from the PTO (use a piece of wire/twine to hold the drive shaft off the ground), then keep the PTO engaged so the lift will function to maintain height. Once you get to your work sight, reconnect your drive shaft and start digging. I have a position controller like John mentions, I don't use it with the PHD though. The PHD is either raised all the way up, or being worked up & down for digging.

Thanks much guys. I don't get very much hang time (maybe 3 minutes), but it's more of an inconvience than anything else. I love my old grey tractor and little things like this are no big deal. I think this winter I may do a complete disassembly and restoration (depends on if I get heat in the tractor barn :) I'm sure I'll have MANY more questions by then... and afterwards maybe I'll have something to share.

Ferguson had a position control for use with the PHD but never supplied it, very strange.

Ideally for use with a PHD you do need Position Control but you can try moving the lever forward from fully lifted position with the engine and PTO running, until the PHD begins to drop, then move the lever back a little until the PHD neither lifts nor lowers, move the lever stop up to the front of the lever now and you should be able to control the PHD much better, you will now have Lift,Lower and Hold. It isn't foolproof by any means but that is how they used them years ago. Mail again if it doesn't work for you as you could have a fault on the tractor too.
