Tune-up for TEA20

I recently bought a TEA20 that has been converted to a 12 volt system. One problem I have come across is the engine would sometimes backfire. I have gone through the ignition system and have replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. The distributor is a Lucas, however I found the coil and condenser to be Delco Remy. The points say made in USA. Since I have a hodge podge of parts I am planning on replacing the points and condenser with new parts from my local dealer and since the coil is 12 volt, I am going to put a resistor between the coil and the ground to the distributor to step it down to 6 volts. I am afraid if I run 12 volts, I'll burn the points. Has anybody run across a problem like this? I would appreciate hearing from anybody who been through this and what they found to solve this. Thank you!

After you do your tune-up check your timing to make sure are firing right. You should also clean your carb and make sure to have the right mixture. But even if your timing is correct when the engine idles back when you rev it up it will have a slight backfire but don't worry about that one it's just something they do.

Just wondering if you checked your plug leads are in correct firing order 1,3,4,2.
Also whether you have cleaned out the carburettor
Could a valve be sticking in the cylinder head
Could the timing be incorrect
