TEA-2085 oil filter

Just bought my first Fergie - a 1952 TEA-2085. When doing an oil and oil filter change I noticed the replacement oil filter was about 1.5 inches shorter than the one that's in there now and about 2 inches shorter than the cannister itself. Looking at the diagrams, it's obvious that many parts are missing. I have only the cannister, mounting rod and spring that pushes up on the filter (no washers, seals, or gaskets). I have custom-made a washer to slide loosely over the rod and sit on top of the spring to hold the filter up in place. Does it matter if oil can flow out of the filter into the cannister between the washer and the rod? What will hold the filter centered on the rod? I don't want to reassamble this until I get it right. Should I be hunting for a complete oil filter assembly?

The usual thing that goes missing is the plate that blocks the end of the filter element, it sticks to the old filter and gets thrown out. If oil escapes like you say between the bolt (rod) then it is escaping unfiltered, it should be a reasonably close fit to the bolt so that any leakage is minimal.
