Hello,

I want to put a three point hitch wood splitter on the back of my Ferguson TEA20 and use the tractor hydraulics. There appears to be a place to attach a hydraulic hose near the pump on the bottom of the tractor. Is that a safe place to get pressure? If so, where do I attach the return line?

Hello,

Thanks for the advice so far. I do have control over the length of the wood I cut so if I use a short cylinder, or limit its travel, on the splitter; it may help the cycle time. Also I have lots of time.

Also, people who add front end loaders must get power another way. I assume they add a pump (to the PTO?).

No they don't always add a PTO pump to operate the loader, the tractor will do it ok. In fact most loaders sold in UK at that time would not have external pump The amount of oil in the cylinder is what takes the time, so use a narrow cylinder if you can find one that will reach the full length of your work, you don't have to use a short one.

To return the oil you have to return it to one of the round plates on the side of the housing below the seat. Either drill the plate or make a "strap" across three holes on the plate,fasten the "strap" using the two end holes and feed the oil through the centre one. Do not return the oil through the filler plug near the gear lever or you will starve the Pump of oil.
The reason the wood splitter operates slowly is the size of the ram and the flow of oil from the pump, at max engine revs. it only pumps about 2.8 galls per min. So the cycle is quite slow.
There are a few places that you can take the oil pressure from but it does depend on how old the tractor is, the older it is the less there are. apart from the ones on the Pump base at the bottom there may be two just forward of the seat, one either side. Be careful tapping into the Pump as the metal is soft, make sure that you get the correct adaptor thread (1/2" x 20TPI)

I have thought about doing that exact same thing with my TEA-2085. I have heard a rumour that hooking up a wood splitter onto the external hydraulics that the splitter will be slower than the 2nd coming, or in other words one would be able to read a 400 page novel by the time you split a truck load of wood. Can anyone explain why that is?? As always, keeper real
