TO-35...starter gear shattered...

Hi guys:

Well, no sooner was the victory dance done from learning all about points and timing and I used the tractor for some odd jobs...

The gear on the starter shattered today -- went to start it and it made a weird thunk/clunk...hit the starter again and I have free spinning...uh oh.

Pulled it off...I have one small part of the gear that used to be on the end of the starter.

The ring gear looked undamaged on a quick inspection, and I could carefully move it back and forth with a screwdriver so I don't think there's anything wrong on the engine side.

I'm planning to drop the oil pan...I'm hoping that'll expose the area around the ring gear enough to fish out any remaing parts of the starter's gear.

Any other tips / tricks / things I should be thinking about to make sure I have it cleaned out?

I have a secert to tell: about 6 years ago,I kept breaking the rear housing (2) of starters on my TO-35. Once the whole round rear part that has the rear starter drive bearing in,broke off,and fell down into the bellhousing,,,,,there must be "extra room" down in there, because after much trying to get out the cast piece,I gave up,and left it in there, and put a new starter on it.I have not heard a noise,rattle..and that little tractor runs perfect. If all you have is starter drive gear in the bellhousing area, dont lose any sleep over getting it removed.

My TO-30 has a little sheet metal cover that comes off the bottom of the bell housing . Does the -35 have one? If so, you can remove that. Removing the oil pan won't help for your problem.

Thanks! in reply to Matt from CT, 05-31-2006 19:05:12
Ok, fishing only I will go :)

Thanks for the advice.

Hopefully I'll be able to account for all the pieces...if the engine has to come out, for the trouble of doing that I'll end doing (or having done) a much, much needed engine rebuild.

Yes,please don't pull the oil pan. In our 54 years
with Massey and Ferguson we have never had to split a tractor. A magnet rod or some fishing will
get out gear parts or end casting parts out. Chuck

Dropping the Oil Pan won"t expose the inside of the clutch housing enough to get out any broken pieces, I wouldn"t have thought. If the bits are too big to sneak under the flywheel, the engine will have to come out and you can"t leave them in there or they could jam between the flywheel and the clutch housing.
