Tried posting this on the Massey forum and got no responses so I thought I'd try here. I believe the TO35 has the same PTO/pump rearend setup as the MF50.
Having problems with a new PTO shaft installation on my 1959 MF50. Has 2 stage clutch and engine/ground PTO. The PTO shifter is very hard to move, and after mowing for 20 minutes, it became EXTREMLY hard to move. Got the PTO disengaged but then could not get it to move again. Got to the point I was worried about breaking the lever if I tried any harder. Once it sat overnight I could move it again but still very stiff. I have done the pump alignment procedure several times as outlined in the service manual and it doesn�t make any difference. Turning the PTO shaft by hand is also pretty stiff, with a slight binding feel at one point in the rotation. When I replaced this shaft, I also replaced both needle bearings so I know they are good. The rear bearing had no play and spin freely out of the tractor. I had the slide coupler out of the tractor before putting the shaft in and it slid fine on the splines at the pump end of the new shaft. The only thing I can think of at this point is the coupler is binding in the rear housing bore it slides in and out of. I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this problem. My thinking at this point is the splines on the shaft where not machined true to the centerline which would cause the coupler to be slightly off center and to bind in the housing. I may have to bite the bullet and buy another new shaft. Thanks for any help.

If it was ok with the old shaft and you are having problems with the new one it would appear from what you say, and something that you are already thinking, the shaft is not machined correctly, the sliding gear if it hasn't been changed will have a certain amount of wear in it so that should make it easier to engage gear, so really it points to the shaft. I don't know where you bought your new shaft but I would take it back and explain your problem. Sparex do a shaft which I don't know if it will fit your tractor but it is for TO35/F40/FE35 the MF part is 181204M92 and the Sparex part is S00277. You need to order Sparex parts from your local tractor dealer. It is harder to engage gear when it is warm as the shaft has expanded with the heat.

Thanks for the reply John. I got the shaft from this site. Unfortunatly I bought it last fall and getting the tractor back together over the winter took longer than expected so I wasnt able to test it until recently. I think to much time has passed to return it. The part number from Sparex you listed is the same for the MF50 so I will have to find out who they sell through in my area. I'm going to pull the shaft back out and do some carefull measureing first to see if I can find out whats not right about it.

If it is the diameter of the splines where the PTO gear slides then perhaps you could have it turned down, but I suspect that it will be the splines themselves, it couldn't be so easy as to be the diameter.
