Tach for TO30

I want a tach for my TO30. I don't want one of those digital Tiny Tach things. I had one and when the battery goes, it is not replaceable. I am thinking a used Ford 8N tach would work? Or should I just shop for a brand new tractor tach?

Any suggestions?

I bought a Suntac for $45 plus shipping, wired it to my coil with a double spade adapter,and used a hose clamp to hook it to my steering column. I cover it with a piece of plastic film to keep the water off it and it works fine.

I have a Ferguson Tack and hour meter on my 30it drives off the generator like a To35 works real good

Chris..... ...you WILL NOT get any 8N mechanical drive "ProofMeter" to work on your TO-30. The camshaft/governor gears aren't right ratios. Why? Different ENGINE. You don't like $25 throw-away mini-tach? Try this BIGGER $200 3-1/2" tach from Dakota Digital. (100rpm accuracy to 18,000rpms)

Well dangit!!!

If you can find a tiny tach that you can replace the battery on, I am all ears... I paid forty dollars for mine and it lasted 2 years and you can't replace the battery...

There has to be an affordable tach out there...

I have sucessfully removed the back on one of those tiny tachs so that I could unhook the battery and reset the hourmeter to zero. It is still working on my tractor. I think that you could find a replacement battery. The battery is about the size of a dime.

Don"t go for one of those tiny analog meters available at the big box auto chain stores that the kids put on their rice rockets either. Been there done that! The needle bounces all over the place. Probably because of the stray electrical noise from the solid plug wires.

If you find an answer, please keep this thread alive with the results. I"d love to know what will work too.

Hi to all....

My MF-135 was converted generator to alternator
yeach...no more tach drive but.....
Last year i bough an electronic tach at autostore
with a switch for 4-6-8 cylinders.

it fitted right in the hole and I secured it with
a ty-wrap under the dash. When I started the engine
the needle was bouncing badly...I corected it by
adding a .01 �f capacitor in series in the wire
tach->coil as close as possible to the meter.

The needle was very stable and still work good.

Loud thump as fist hits forehead! Of course, and thanks. I even restore antique radios and this did not occur to me. Chris this and the clamp to steering column as stated above could well be your inexpensive answer. That is how mine is mounted. No irreversible damage to sheet metal if you want to restore later.

If you have various capacitor values you may try
different value to find which one will give best
needle stability. I tried a .01 �f first time
lucky me....it was the good one. Value may vary
due to different electronic characteristics among tack's.

This is what I was thinking Yep. Where do you buy capacitors and how expensive are they? Also, if that one you siad doesn't work well, what to try next? And finally, is the wire just snipped and solder the capacitor?
