I think I may need a new radiator cap for my to20, runs hot when bush hogging, and the radiator coils are clean! Can anyone tell me what pressure cap pounds I need? Thanks Gene in La.

If memory serves, the pressure cap is 4 lbs. But the depth of the cap is important too, and it is a fraction deeper than some of the 4 lb caps. I do know for certain that the cap is exactly the same as the cap on a 1960s series International Scout 80. You can get them from NAPA. If they don't have a listing for the tractor ask for a cap for a 1965 Scout 80. I did have the part number, but don't have it handy.

Normally, the TO is "overcooled" and should not overheat no matter how hard you work her. All the other posts are right. 4psi cap, lots of places carry them. Get a cowling, a lot harder to find, but find one, or make one if your handy with sheet metal. Also, make sure your fan blade is mounted correctly, the fan should pull air thru the radiator and blow it back on the engine(and on you). I think the blades bolt-up either way, only one way is the right way. I was shocked to discover how much crap "clean" looking radiator fins holds-up. Even though it looks clean, shoot compressed air, and also garden hose both directions thru the fins to blow-out/washout chaff, grass, etc.
As far as rodding the inside, unless you know someone that will do it cheap or free, save that for a last resort after doing the other stuff first. Running a can of radiator flush thru might help, and definitely won't hurt. Take a few minutes to adjust the power screw on the carb (big adjust screw) according to the manual, a built-in feature on the carb is to run richer under load to help prevent overheating.
Might also want to pull your themostat, drop it in a pan of hot water to make sure it is opening ALL THE WAY. Should be full open by 185 degrees F, if not, get a new one... ~$6... cheap, the Ford N thermo works just fine on the TO-20 if you have trouble finding one.

That should be enough ideas to get your TO running a little cooler.

Gene..... ..you write..... "runs hot when bush hogging, and the radiator coils are clean"..... .. Are you talking the EXTERIOR radiator fins & tubes? Or are you talking the INSIDES of the radiator tubes? Radiator tubes are thin passageways and do get CLOGGED from mineralization deposits. This is something even chemical radiator cleaners generally won't desolve. You have to take your radiator into a real radiator shop and have it "rodded". Radiator shops used to do this all the time, stick long thin metal fingers up thru each radiator tube, mechanically cleaning the tube deposits away.

Howsomevers; don't be surprized that the real reason your radiator overheats is because the "fins" have rusted loose and no longer efficently transfer heat thru the radiator matrix. In which case, the only cure is a new radiator core. Often times cheaper to buy a new radiator rather than pay the EPA environmental lead solder polution fees at the radiator shop.

All the other comments about fan shrouds and belts and water pumps and radiator pressure caps and leaks are true and worth considering, but if you don't have a good radiator core, it will STILL OVERHEAT..... ....respectfully, Dell

Check your fan belt and pulleys. If pulleys are worn, belt will be running in the bottom of the vee, thus not transmitting the power (to run the fan)as per design of vee belts n pulleys.

Also how:
- big is the slasher?
- tall and wet is the material being slashed?
- short you are trying to cut it?

All will have an effect.

It should be 4lbs psi. Sparex supply these through your local dealer. Part number is:- S41517 In the UK parts list they say you can also use a 7lbs psi cap in extreme conditions. Have you got the radiator fan cowl fitted and the fan fitted the correct way around? Look for any rusty water marks around the engine, that will give an indication of a leak at that point. Check the hoses and the water Pump for the rusty marks too.

John! It never had a cowl since I had it!!! That would really help, were might I get one? No rust spots anywere radiator leaks so have to refill everytime I use tractor. Thats on list to get repaired: Along with several others, but one day I hope to get it all fixed! realy enjoy tinkering with tractor: And the help from people like yourself make it really appreciated. Thanks again for all your help! I allways look for your answers on any questions that is asked! Thank you! YOU really make the forum!

Fan cowls come up on a simi-regular basis on e-bay. Any cowl for a TE-20, TO -20, -30 -35 will work as they are the same.

One thing you can try: is contact one the guys pulling tractors apart on e-bay and ask if they have one laying around. If they do be sure to ask for pictures. I would think that $30 to $35 + shipping should get a cowl.

Hi Jeff, The fan cowlings do vary from engine type to engine type, the water Pump is the crucial factor and they are not all in the same position. The TE20 and TO20 should be the same, as they have the same engine but the TEA has one pump on the block and one with a Pump on the head, so the cowl is different, I must admit they do look alike but the fan isn't central on them all....John

As John says you will always have a problem until you get the leak fixed... However, UNTIL you do get the radiator fixed so it holds pressure, you would much be better off to have no pressure at all as it just forces it to leak more. You might find that if you keep the cap loose you will lose less coolant and it might work for light loads. But, if it is a hot day and/or you are working it hard, this won't work either because it will boil/evaporate the cooolant. Jim

Thanks for that Gene. It will always get hot if the radiator leaks as it wont be able to pressurise the system and if it hasn't got the cowling on it wont be able to drag enough air through the Radiator. As far as I know there is no one making these cowls now so you would have to go to a breakers Yard and get one, I would certainly ask on here, someone will be bound to know where you could get one. Do a new posting asking where you could get one and tell them the model as they have different ones.....John
