I just converted my TO30 to a 12 volt system and I am waiting on a Pertronix electronic ignition module. While I am waiting on it to arrive I thought I would go ahead and tune the old girl up. Should I increase the plug gap or should I keep it at the book specs?

I wish I hadn"t used the pertronics electronic ignition. My problem was withe the plastic part that goes over the cam on my lucas distributor. (TE-20) It didn"t fit the cam and was loose. Timing kept changing. Didn"t want to glue it to the cam, so finally, I took the whole thing off and went back to the points. The distributor shaft had play in it, so I put a new bearing in it, and it runs and starts as good as new. It is still a 6v system.

I believe Pertonix recommends that you open up the plug gaps if you use both the Ignitor ignition module AND their super coil. I have had just the ignition module for over a year and a half and I get qick starts and a very smooth idle. Don't expect any power increases, just better reliability and easier starting with no fouled or corroded points to fool with.

This reply is a recommendation only.
I prefer leaving the plug gap as close to stock as possible. Any small (Probably to small to notice) gain in performance would some day be offset by a lack of reliability. I say this because your plugs (with a larger gap) will now need a higher voltage to fire. As you increase the voltage requirement of your plugs, you increase the possibility that the spark will find another way to ground and may not fire one or nore your plugs at all. Once again IMHO put this mod. on for better reliability rather than for a performance increase, but if you get an increase, enjoy it!

They should tell you in the information they send with the Pertronix module as to what you need to do about that. You should find a big difference with your engine once you have that fitted, everyone who has had one has been really pleased they got it.

There was nothing in the instuction about the plug gap so I will leave it alone for now. While finishing the wiring I did not like the way the resistor block looked so I have ordered the Pertronix flame thrower 40,000 volt coil. Judging from nonac99's reponse I will have to increase the gap for this coil. Have you ever heard of anyone using this coil? John , I just wanted to thank you for the advice you give in this forum. It has been very helpful.

If I can help with advice I am happy, it keeps me in touch with a tractor that I have always liked and that I started my working life with. Regarding the coil, I have heard of them being used before but no-one recently, they all said that it was a big improvement and they were happy they got it. Having said that I don't think anyone would admit they had made a big mistake getting one either....lol...I think that it will be a good thing and you will feel an improvement, anyway you will be able to tell us yourself when you get it, we all would like to know what you think about it.

I just put the Ignitor in my '48 TE 20 and you would not believe how easily it starts. I only need to touch the key and it's running.

Dennis,

I have a 52 TO30 that still has the 6 volt system. Tractor runs great but starts slow. Gen ok and replaces both gen wires, cleaned and checked all grounds and connections. Regulator only puts out 6.2 to 6.4 volts on a digital meter at working rpm. Think it should be closer to 7.1. Looking at the Pertronics system. Is yours still 6 volts or did you change to 12. Really like to get this slow starting problems licked.
Thanks, Ron
