T030 runs great, won't start

After doing a bunch or diagnostics, we now have a good spark, it cranks better than ever, and runs like a champ. The problem is that it will not start without a blast of ether. This happens either hot or cold. We have also found that the ether is not very effective if sprayed directly into the carb, but if we remove the small plug in the intake manifold and spray it there, it starts immediatly. We have looked at the butterfly valve at the top of the carb and adjusted the linkage so it is wide open. It seems to be pulling air well through the carb when we try to choke it with the palm of a hand. The gas is shut off between tries, so it is not flooded, the plugs seem dry. Does anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

Success!! We tried pretty much everything that you advised. The new plugs made no difference. The gas did flow like the cow peeing. The timing was set as to the manual specs, as was the carb. We also set the governor linkage back to the way it was, and were choking it when we tried starting it. None of that helped, but we did see that the spark was yellow not blue.

We had some advice that there is a "door" on the choke plate that should close with a spring. There is not a good picture of it in the manual, but it was without a spring, so we put one in. At the same time we cleaned up most of the wiring from the ignition and the voltage regulator. We also replaced the ampmeter. The old one did not work, and it turns out was full of corrosion. Now it starts up every time, and turns over even better than it used to.

We did not check the spark to see if it is now blue. We will check on that this weekend and give and update.

Thanks for all the help.

"We have looked at the butterfly valve at the top of the carb and have adjusted the linkage so that it is wide open." That butterfly valve is called the throttle plate and if you adjusted it wide open then your governor linkage is out of adjustment. You are liable to have a runaway engine if it does start. Put it back to where it was and find out why your not getting a start. You said you have a good spark. I take that to be a fat, bluish spark, not some sorry ol' yellow or orangey spark. If it's not a fat, bluish spark, find out why. You might want to check the ignition timing also. A good spark at the wrong time is useless.
Have you checked to make sure that you have good fuel delivery to the carburetor. To do this, put a container under the carb, open the fuel valve at the tank, open the carb drain plug and the fuel should gush out continuously for at least 30 seconds like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If it doesn't then find out why. If your fuel delivery is good, check your main jet setting. It should be 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns out from closed. Make sure that your carb gasket at the connect flange is good and the the flange is tight. Make sure your intake manifold is on tight and has no leaks. Have you tried choking it to start?

Not much info to go on here but I had to reply because it sounds like a problem I had.
New spark plugs fixed it but I thought the ones in the engine were good so I kept looking elsewhere. Had the same problem with ether and did the same thing you did. I had good spark, so I began to suspect a leaking intake or carb issues or on and on we go.
