Oil Holes On Connecting Rods - Which Way ?

In a discussion a short while back on which way the oil holes face on the connecting rods. What is the purpose of the slot in the piston ? And why do the pistons that came in my rebuild kit not have them ? Why spray oil on just the "thrust" side of the cylinder only ? I'll have to re-check mine because I thought the video I got said to face them towards the cam. I'm also going to check the oil hole in the crank for it's orientation where the connecting rods go.

Oil is sprayed on the thrust side because the loading between the piston and the cylinder wall is higher and needs to be eased so that it wont have excess friction under load. The opposite side is lubricated by splash feed from the crankshaft turning. Not all engines do have this oil feed for the cylinder walls, they just rely on splash from the crankshaft.
The hole for the oil in the crank doesn't really matter where it is as long as the oil flow can circulate and flow to whatever points it should reach and that will have been taken care of in the design of the engine. Not all pistons do have a slot in them, this is usually to allow for expansion, pistons can be of different metals, some require allowance for expansion more than others.
