TEA-20 Transmission problem

Ok, so I just finished plowing the garden on the last row I threw in the clutch as I approched the lawn.I put the transmission in neutral and raised the plow then I went for second gear and let out the clutch and nothing no forward or reverse gears. The PTO and the 3 point work just fine, so I unscrewed the transmission filler plug and looked down into the transmission while running the engine and shifted through all the gears. The input shaft and some of the gears turn fast when I let out the clutch but the tractor don't move? Any thoughts on what to take apart first?

I pulled the side inspection cover and yes I could see what looked to be a pinnion shaft turning when I put it in gear. Today I'll be checking for a broken axle shaft and ring gear. Two years ago I had the axles shafts out to replace bearings and seals, brakes and at that time I thought the axle shafts were so huge they would never break. now its got me wondering?

The whole back end was strengthened after serial number 325,000 the axle-shafts were made tougher and the size of the ring gear was increased. Just be sure to shim the axle shafts correctly when you replace them. What breaks the axle-shafts is shock loading and torque reversal when you shift from forward to reverse quickly without even a slight pause. If the wheels are ballasted there is no way the wheels can easily slip to absorb any shocks that may occur.

It does sound like the Ring Gear in the axle or an axle-shaft has broken. If you put the tractor in gear and sit on the seat you may find one of the Rear wheels "wobbling" slightly, if this is the case, that axle-shaft has broken. If it doesn't "wobble" at all then check the Diff in the axle by jacking up the rear wheels and apply the foot brake hard. Remove one of the round side covers below the seat, start the engine, run it slowly and put it in gear, let the clutch in slowly and look through the side inspection hatch, the shaft that is straight in front of you drives the wheels, if this is turning and the wheels aren't then it is the Ring gear and Pinion that is at fault. Don't try to do this without jacking it up off the floor as the drive could suddenly pick up in the damaged parts and you would get run over. Usually if it is a Ring Gear it will make a noise as it breaks an axle shaft doesn't make any sound usually it just twists off. If you have been doing a lot of shunting back and forward and maybe been a little heavy on the clutch with too many revs on the engine, this will be the reason. could possibly be in the ring-gear and pinion.
