Battery won't charge. Alternator Gauge just a little on neg side. New battery. Is the next step a new Alternator, or should I have the old one rebuilt? How do I test the Alternator? Thanks for your help

I have found that some generating problems are caused by over oiling the rear bearing on the generator. The comuntator and brushes get all gunked up and there goes the ability for it to charge. I bought a generator on eBay for $15.00. I figured that I would have a core to trade in at least. After inspecting and testing and cleaning the Comuntator with mineral spirits it works like a new one. Saved myself over $100.00 for a rebuilt one. I'm not totally sold on converting to 12v.It really seems to hammer the starter and ring gear.

after market regulators can be a problem in reply to Raye Ann, 05-08-2006 08:34:29
I have purchased 3 after market regulators and all slowly lost their ability to make the battery charge.

You can increase the charge by slightly pulling down the tab connected to the spring on the points with the smallest diameter wiring. This works for awhile, but mine still would ulitmately refuse to charge. If you pull it down too far, the charge will be very high and will not come back to 0-2 amps after recharging the battery from starting it. So be careful about this, if allowed to charge at 10 amps for a long period it will damage the battery.

I finally put the oldest one I had...a HF original...and vila, it works and keeps working.

The point about grounding the field is important to determine whether it is the generator or the regulator at fault. but you'll need an ammeter in line to check the current..

if its still a six volt, I'd try the voltage regulator first, especially if its the original regulator. VR's are about $20 and might solve your problem...there is a set of points in the regulator and sometimes, if there isn't a good connection, it'll drain a brand new battery down to nothing in very short order. Besides, a $20 regulator is a lot less than a new alternator. Good Luck

If you have a Perkins AG3 152 cu in, with standard Delco Remy 12 volt, 25 amp ALT. Check out standard alternator for a 1970 camero. Same one and a lot cheaper from your local discount parts store.

It's a 6 volt.

Sounds like we are talking about an original 6V generator, not an alternator. Big difference.
The #1 cause for poor charging on a 6V system is corrosion on the connections and grounding points. Testing your 6V, positive ground generator - With the engine running ~ half throttle, connect a jumper wire to the field (F) terminal on the generator, and to a good ground, like the ground lug on the back of the dash (make sure your ground connections are clean & shiny first). That jumper will force your generator to full output. If your amp gauge is working, it should ramp-up to ~7-9 amps. You can check voltage across the battery with a voltmeter, your voltage should increase to ~ 6.8-7 volts. If you don't get that response, your generator is not working correctly.
If the generator does respond to the jumper, the voltage regulator is the likely problem, but clean the ground point on the regulator and all the connections and test again before buying a regulator to make sure it's not a dirty connection problem.
If you replace the regulator or generator, you will need to polarize the generator, or it will not charge, even if it works properly.

Since it's 6 volts, i'm assuming you have a generator, and not an alternator. Put volt meter across battery when running and you should have about 7 volts, more or less. Chances are you don't. I don't have my manual handy, but if memory serves, you can test if it is VR or Gen. by removing the Field wire from Gen. and grounding it while running. If the charge jumps up somewhat, it is VR. If not, it is Gen. Otherwise, you can remove both and take them to good automotive electrical shop and have them troubleshoot. They can rebuild these generators for about $85. Or they can sell you a new VR, which will be cheaper. You will have to polarize them when you reinstall, but the shop can tell you how (also in archives on this site). You can mess around replacing one or the other, etc., but best way unless you have manual and know what to look for is to take both the VR and Gen to good elec shop.
