TO-35 dilema update

Thanks to Fred & Keith for their good advice. I took her apart again & removed the crank & cam gears. I pulled out the camshaft a little (not past the lifters), took out the screws that held the thrust plate, and put the camgear back on the shaft until it bottomed out on the shoulder. I was able to spin the thrust plate, so I at least had some clearance. I then screwed the thrust plate back on the block, & put on the gear and tightened the nut up. I tapped the cam shaft back into the engine, and zeroed the dial indicator. I pryed the gear back out with a bar (not too hard) and got about .001 - .0015 clearance. I tryed this a few times and got the same readings. I took off the nut & gear put a .0025 shim washer against the shoulder & reinstalled the gear, governor & nut...torquing it to 67 ft.lbs. I again checked clearances the same way as before & got .0035 - .004. This was within spec. so I put her back together. All I can figure out is the new camshaft's shoulder to shoulder width wasn't quite as wide as it should have been. Thanks again for the help!
