my f40 has grey seat and a black back rest. Which is original? I use my external hydraulic control valves to control my loader and rear blade. The loader holds it's position well but the rear blade leaks down quite fast but seems to hold OK when the external valve is locked. Is it possible to replace the "o" rings in the external valves? Could this be my problem?

Thank you John. I primarily use my Freeman loader with front blade along with a rear blade for plowing snow here in northern Wisconsin. It always puzzled me why the loader using the right control valve would hold its position but the left valve controlling the rear blade would not. Now I see that the oil could not only leak back through the external valve but through the master cylinder as well. I hope I got that right. I still don't know if my seat cushions should be black or grey.

The correct way to use the loader and blade on your tractor is to use the spool valves to operate the loader with the main hydraulic Control lever (the square topped one marked Draft) at the top of the quadrant and the Position Control Lever (the one with the round knob) on the FAST mark on the quadrant. To use the rear blade you would leave the loader in a raised position at whatever height you wish and move the square Draft lever to the bottom of the quadrant, then simply use the Position Control lever to raise and lower the blade. If you would like the full Operating Instructions for the hydraulics on your tractor, email me at:-
fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk and ask me for them, they are much simpler to use than a lot think but the tractor Instruction Book goes into great unnecessary depth in explaining them and most people lose interest before they finish reading it, I have a simplified version.

The seat cushions on the Ferguson 40 were gray with red seam trim. Replacement cushions are still available. Sparex dealers carry them and possibly Tisco dealers.

I think I understand what you are trying to do. The loader is controlled separately by the spool valves so as long as the valve has no leaks it WILL hold ok. The rear linkage dropping is usually due to a combination of the valves in the side chambers and the control valve leaking. It isn't worth while fitting valves in the side chambers as they never seem to be any use as they never seal properly the Control Valve will be worn and the washers that the valve slides through will be leaking, it wont be a case of replacing the "O" rings but replacing the Control Valve assy. You will possibly find that the pistons in the pump that go into the side chambers will be badly marked, as they usually are if they are the original type without rings. If this is the case you need to fit the later pistons fitted with piston rings which need larger different chambers. This will give greater displacement of oil and operate the hydraulics faster. I think that when you say the external valve is "locked" you mean that the oil flow to it is turned off and the oil is not escaping through it but through the side chambers and Control valve
