TEA20 hydraulic overhaul

I've been having troubles with the hydraulic lift on the 3 point since I received this TEA20. At first the lift won't lift until the tractor has been running for 5-10 minutes. After you have been using the lift for another 5-10 minutes, the lift won't go down unless you shift off the PTO. Once you shift off the PTO the arms slowly fall back down. Shifting the PTO lever back on may or may not get the lift arms working.

I have since drained the hydraulic fluid. When I removed the center plug I was stunned by the amount of black sludge/tar that was present. I then removed the right inspection plate and noticed that the whole internal assembly is totally covered in a thick black slurry.

My thoughts are that the valves and intakes are all plugged up and that a thorough cleaning may get my tractor back to normal. I planned on removing the top plate and hosing the whole assembly with diesel or kerosene. After checking out the internal assembly, applying new plate gaskets and closing her up.

Does this sound like a prudent plan off attack?

You certainly need to get the thick oil or whatever washed out, but drop the Pump not take the top off would be better since it is most likely the Control Valve in the Pump that is sticking due to all this goo. You would be able to wash the pump properly and make sure that the Control Valve was clean and free in its Bush. You could still take the top off if you wish but there is little up there that would cause any problems except the Control Spring behind the seat and that may require adjustment.If you need information on how to remove the Pump and what parts numbers you may need, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk

That's the common route for getting the mess cleaned up. But simply pouring the solvent through will do little if any good. You've got to get a little pressure behind it to get good results. Put your solvent in a cheap garden sprayer. I personally prefer mineral spirits, but diesel or fuel oil will work too. While you're at it, you'll be able to do a much more thorough cleaning job by pulling the PTO shaft and dropping the pump out as well. It really isn't much more work and you'll do a much, much better job. Plus you'll have access to the control valve on the pump - which sounds very much like it's sticking. The gaskets are $5 and it's only about an hour's extra labor. Make the call.
