Temperature Guage?

My TO20 has had a temp guage installed and it's broken. I bought a new one, but can't figure out how to get the sensing bulb to seat and seal with out using the adapter supplied with the guage. I'm trying to put it back into the water outlet where the old one was. The nut will thread into the 3/8" NPT hole, but the bulb doesn't seem to seat against anything and is loose. This is the same setup as the old one, but I frankly didn't pay that much attention when I took it out. The adapter provides a seat for the bulb, but it is 1/2" NPT. Way too big. I really don't care whether I have the guage, but I'm stuck with the 2" hole in the dash and if there's going to be a guage in it, it had better work. Anybody done this and have any ideas?

The sealing mechanism for the bulb is the flange around the bulb pressed against the flat ridge machined at the bottom of the threaded port on the manifold. The jamb nut you screw down on top the bulb should thread down tight enough to "jamb" the flange to the bottom of the port. If it doesn't, might need to clean out the threads in the port with a tap. Make sure the jamb nut is long enough to do the job. I bought a temp. gauge for a Forn NAA/600 series and found it worked perfectly on my TO-20.

Joe I have a To30 it dont use the adapter you want to clean out the hole that the bulb goes in because if not it will stick ,if you look the nut should screw into this housing I use a SW. guage but I bought a NOS but have not used it yet Good luck.

If all else fails, just wrap bulb with several turns of teflon tape (ahead of flange) to take up slack until nut will tighten up and seal. That is how temp gauge is installed in my FE35, no leaking problems.

You may have one from the TEA tractor, it is different to the TE or TO and the replacements do use an adaptor like you say you have.

I believe you have a guage designed for automotive use. If you purchase a guage from an ag supplier like Tisco or Hershell-Adams it should fit. I have a TO-20 that I installed one of the Hershell-Adams guages and it fit perfectly.
