TO-20 Not Sparking

Well after sitting around this winter I am trying to get the 20 out to do some grubbing. Naturaly It will not start.
I have verified that voltage is getting to the ignition coil.

I have removed the Distributer lead from the coil and jumped a test light across the lead to the + batt. The light never goes on when 'starting'/turning over the engine.

I have wired the coil, + to the batt feed, Hooked up a plug to the coil and toggled - (ground) to the coil. The only sparking that occurs is when the - hits the coil nothing from the plug (Yes the plug is grounded :).

To me it sounds like I had two things fail on me here, 1. the coil and 2 the gap.

If that is true I can easily replace the coil but how do I pull the distributer? I would idealy like to some how watch the gap trying to close/open when I turn the engine over.

I'm not sure i understand what you did but an easy way to check for spark is to remove the high tension wire from the center of the distributor and hold it near a good ground. Turn on the key and engage the starter. You should see a fat, bluish spark. An alternate method is to remove a plug wire, insert a bent wire or a paper clip in the spark plug boot , hold it near a good ground and then turn on the key and engage the starter. Again you should see a fat bluish spark. If you don't make sure that your points are set correctly and have no corrosion on them. Also check to make sure you have battery voltage to the coil.

I have a TE 20 and it did the same thing. If you haven't done so try filing your points and resetting them. Hope this helps Ivan

What is the best way to get to them? I did not see any easy access to get to the points.

Take off the distributor cap and the dust cover and you'll find the points and the condensor.

Are there any screws holding on the dust cover? I dont see anything that might be holding it on and would preferr to not break the dust cover trying to pry it off. The manual I have is useless in regards to this, as I assume it is "common knowledge" (that I dont seem to have) how to disassemble a distributer :)

The dust cover just sits on the distributor. I believe there is a locating nub that fits in a notch on the lip of the distributor housing that keeps it from rotating. It should lift off. It's pretty rugged so I doubt that you'd damage it if you pried up gently with a screw driver. Get yourself a real Ferguson Shop Manual. They're under $20.

Jerry && All,

Thanks A bit of gentle persuasion poped it off! Yes it appears that the points needed to be filed. Hopefully that will solve the problem as now they appear to close all of the way. Ran out of sun before I could pull the test lamp out to ensure conductivity.

Hopefully will have more sun and no rain tomorrow.
