I went to start my tractor last Friday, it cranked over about 4 times, and was just about to start(engine is worn out...), but the starter locked up hard, and I had to pull the tractor backwards in high gear to get it unlocked, now all it'll do is turn the engine over a bit and lock up again(not as bad though.) If I pull the plugs out, it'll crank it over, but, it doesn't sound healthy, it's turning slow and grinding a little bit, almost as if the starter isn't engaging right, but the starter is getting hot, so something is holding it back from turning. I can spin the engine over by hand if I put a little tension on the fan belt and turn the fan, so there's nothing wrong with the engine, and there shouldn't be anything wrong with the starter, I just had it rebuilt and converted to a 4 feild 12v setup, and I've only used it 6 times since I got it back, and it works fine if I take it off of the tractor. And to make matters worse, my loader is after sinking to the ground making the tractor immobile. Anyone got any ideas??

Evan,
A good rule of thumb when doing mechanic work, is check the last thing touched. Whoever rebuilt it may have used a starter "nose" that is incompatible with your flywheel and ring gear. Check for things binding between starter and flywheel. Hope this fixes easy for you. I hate to have the tractor down at all...you always need it worst when you can't have it at all.

Evan, It sure sounds like something in the bendix has broken or is malfuctioning. You say that it had been rebuilt recently, but did the rebuild include the bendix or just the stator and windings. If you just have to get it started before it sinks to China, see if you can buy or borrow a manual crank handle. I think every tractor owner should have one to use in a pinch. Mama's car is in the ditch and the tractor battery is too low to turn the engine over? No sweat olive oil, I's gots me trusty crank handle.

Well, I'd have started it with a crank long ago, but, my loader uses the front pto to run it's hydraulic pump. I'm not sure what was done to the starter, I sent it to my uncle, and he had it fixed, the nose had broken on it, so, I could not have it fixed locally, and I never thought to ask him what had all been done to it, I was just glad to get it back, I went all of last winter without a starter, all I know is it was converted to 12v, the nose was repaired, it's painted green, it cost me lost of $$$ and it spins the tractor alot faster now than it used to. I'm going to investigate the bendix on Saturday, it was my first suspect, but the starter being rebuilt made me think otherwise. Now if I could crank the sucker over from the pto.... I need it to spread gravel

Evan, I had a similar problem. Mine was resolved when I cleaned up the battery terminals and replaced the battery cables.

I had a somewhat similar problem when I bought my 1955 TO-35 used tractor. It appeared that when the starter gear came out to engage the flywheel, it came out too far. This caused the end of the starter gear to jamb against the face of the flywheel. The starter would stall out, get hot, but not turn over the engine. The solution was to put some shim stock between the starter and the engine to pull the starter back a little. If you have the same problem, you should see some wear marks on the side of the starter gear where it is hitting the flywheel. Hope this might help.

Excuse my english. Could the starter drive be screwed up this would cause starter to work fine off tractor but bind up when engaged to flywheel. I tried to email you about the NS Flywheelers old engine club in Pugwash. Do you want the URL for it?
