I WAS PLOWING MY FEILD WITH MY TO-20 AND THE TRACTOR JUST QUIT LIKE I TURNED IT OFF AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES I COULD START IT AGAIN THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE MORE TIMES I THEN THE LAST TIME IT QUIT TESTED THE COIL FOR SPARK AND HAD NONE . WHAT COULD IT BE ?

Hey guys,

I tend to agree with the vapor lock problem.

Had the same problem for the past four years while field cutting with brush hog. Finally decided to reroute the fuel line while doing preseason maintenance 2 weeks ago. Used a 1/4" SS line and routed the line up high behind the tank then down and along side the breather tube from the air cleaner to the carb keeping the maximum distance from the exhaust.

So far so good but I've yet to get a +90 degree day to run for a 3 to 4 hour period. It has eliminated the problem from long idle periods though where I was seeing some major problems.

I experience same problem and have taken gas tank off to clean twice and carb apart a few times. I'm pretty sure it isn't plugged. But I have been suspicious of a vapor lock - where fuel would boil in fuel line and cause it to shut down until slightly cooled. The random-ness of the problem and the fact that it usually doesn't repeat on same day makes me try to ignore it - until next time.

You might also want to check the key switch. They some times go bad. Get your voltmeter and check to see that you have battery voltage on both sides of the key switch with the key in the ON position. While you're at it, check the entire primary circuit. With the points closed and the key in the ON position, you should have near battery voltage up to the coil.

Bad coils will often act up like that. They run when they are cool and after warming up, they cut out.
