TEA20 mainshaft front bearing

Dismantled my transmission to find that the tapered roller bearing that supports the front of the mainshaft is not a pressed fit. It slid off easily. I suspect that this is by design; it would be near impossible to press/pull it as it has to be assembled when inside the case (it is the last item to be slid onto the shaft in situ. Does anybody know for sure if this is indeed a 'loose' fit bearing? Thanks

I recently rebuilt the transmission on both a TED and a TEF 20. All the 4 large bearings 2-3 inch diameter were press fit however the small bearing 1-2 inch diameter that runs inside the input shaft gear and is visible if you remove the input shaft and clutch release bearing trumpet casting from inside the bell housing were a sliding fit both originally and when replaced. If you decide to replace this bearing you may need to check endfloat by adjusting shims at the rear large bearing holder which will require splitting the gearbox from the backend (make sure you remove PTO lever "porthole" cover as there is a delicate PTO assembly that sticks out the back of the box attached to this lever)

Dave JKL - Thanks, that's what I thought. I dug into my parts tractor last night and it too had a 'sliding' bearing, on the front of the mainshaft, as you describe. I suspect it is designed that way as I cannot envision how the heck it could otherwise be pressed/pulled while in the case.

Which shaft are you calling the main-shaft? I suspect that you mean the centre shaft in the box which is actually the Counter-shaft. The bearing on the front of that as you say is nearly impossible to fit once the shaft is installed, nevertheless it is a pressed fit onto the shaft as are all the taper bearings in that box. There was a small puller that was used to fit and remove bearings in that box, it was just long enough to take one of the shafts.
