First I want to thank everyone for all of the information I received regarding the compensating spring link. Jim in OH, thank you so much for the pictures, they were exactly what I needed.

Now for the second part. When I hook the compensating spring to the hole on the goose neck, I know I use a cotter pin, how far out does the cotter pin extend from the goose neck? Should I have the cotter pin head pulled tight against the goose neck or leave it a certain distance away? Thank you in advance for any information you have on this.

John,
I checked my TO-20 and TO-30 Parts manuals. They both show a picture of something on the end of the compensator spring but neither one describes the part. I am going to assume that since my TO-30 had a cotter pin through the hole in the water outlet elbow that should be the way to attach the spring on that end. you may have to experiment with spring lengths and tensions to get your governor and throttle linkage to perform the way that you want it to.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for the info. In the parts book form# 693 041 M1, on page 66/67 item 39. It is labeled:
Spring, Gov. Compensating & Pin, Cotter, Gov. Compensating Spring. So I am pretty sure it was a cotter pin originally. Can you tell me is your cotter pin head pulled tight right next to the hole in the neck or is there a gap? Thanks again.

As I recall, the spring loops through the hole in the tab that is part of the gooseneck casting and needs no cotter pin. The other end of the spring loops through the hole in the small link.

Hi John, I tried hooking it directky to the gooseneck but it pulls my throttle wide open. So I looked in the parts book and it shows a cotter pin on the end of the spring. Any ideas? Thanks John(Ohio)

I have been looking more into that problem you have and I have found a picture that shows a SCREWED rod that fixes between the spring and the Top Hose (goose neck) housing it doesn't show it all in the parts list but there is one picture in the Service manual. There is no mention of it, just the picture. I would think the adjustment is just take out the free play in the spring. It is only a screwed rod with a hole in one end to attach the spring to, so it is like the spilt pin you thought it may be. Problem is now finding one that will do.

well it should be ok, have you slackened off the clamp to the long throttle rod and allowed it to turn?

In the Service Manual it doesn't show any cotter pin, the spring hooks directly to the "goose neck" / top hose connection.
