Long shifter on TO-30 next to PTO shifter??????

I bought a TO-30 and on the side of the left inspection plate next to the PTO shifter is a long shifter about 20" long. What is this? It does not seem to do anything when it is moved back and forth. Help

Now I just have to figure why it doesnt work?
Tonight I will take off the inspection plate and take a look.
Thanks guys that looks exactly like the one I have. I wonder if I can get it too work and take it out of the tractor and sell it what it would be worth.

It is indeed a live-pto conversion,not seen one of them before, you learn something everyday.This is what it says about that gearbox kit:-
Note the extra long lever coming out of the left side pto shifter cover on this 8N. This is the extremely rare Sherman live pto conversion for the 8N. The lever operates a manual clutch pack between the transmission and the rear end pinion gear. This allowed the tractor operator to start up normally with the pto engaged and then use the long lever to disengage the tractor drive and stop the tractor without stopping the pto. If you use the lever for stopping and starting and left the regular foot clutch alone you had a "live" pto.

I sure wish I knew more about this. I took off the inspection plate and the shifter round ball end goes into a collar that seems to be loose and that is why it is not working. Question is how to fix it or is it worth it and if it is I might have to split the tractor and take it out. MAybe I will try to sell it on ebay or fix it and put it on my 1952 8N. In any case I found a manual for this sherman live pto kit.

I have never seen this gearbox at all, but from the location of it in the tractor I think it would be best if you did split it at the back of the gearbox as it will be there and easy to work on.

What is involved in splitting the rear end. Does everything slide right out or will I need special tools? Have you ever taken one apart?

Taken lots apart but never one with this gearbox, but it cant be that much difference. I would think that it is bolted on the back of the gearbox. You don't need any special tools to split the tractor, just a good solid floor and don't forget to put a couple of wooden wedges under the front axle (one either side, between axle and the axle carrier) to stop the engine tilting over when you wheel it apart.
Take the back end from the front is easiest, then you have the rear wheels to push against. Really you need a jack on wheels under the back end then it will roll away easily, a plain jack under the tractor transmission is fine.

I think that I got it right. Here is a picture (from Smith's site)

and also below is the link to his page that talks about it. Note that he calls it a "clutch pack". Again, I am not sure that is a friction or dog clutch. While you are driving the tractor, disengage this clutch and the tractor should stop if it is working correctly. Jim

Willy, After being puzzled for a while, I think that this is possibly a rare after market "clutch" that was installed between the transmission output and the differential. This would make sense also with the "Live PTO" comments previously made because it would allow the tractor's forward motion to be stopped without dissengaging the engine clutch thereby allowing a sort of "live PTO". I doubt that this is a friction clutch (too much torque) but probably a dog clutch that allows smooth dissengagement but just an engagement that should be done with the friction clutch in. Maybe this is not correct, but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Jim
