TEA 2085 ring gap

Manual specs show: Ring gap closed - .010" to .015". If it's closed, how is there a gap? Additionally, all my rings have a gap around .125". Can I get 'bigger' rings or am I looking at pistons/sleeves? Thankyou

1/8" is a bit excessive - likely to cause blow-by. However, sometimes it's better to leave alone than just re-ring. If you do, you'll have to use a ridge cutter to remove any ridge such as John mentioned, otherwise the new top ring will likely break when it touches the ridge. Also, clean out the carbon at the bottom of piston grooves. Your call - if pistons are badly worn (rings, pistons, liners all wear together) you may consider a piston & liner set. Then you've got to consider whether the crank / oil pressure is up to the increased heat and loading.

Plastigauged crank mains and they are in limits (.0025). Oil pump specs all within limits except pump shaft diameter, which is .4990 vs .4980. After much deliberation, I will be going with new sleeves/pistons.

If it were mine I would like about .001 to .0015 on the mains and rods. New bearing may get you there or .001 undersize. I have shimmed new bearing to get the fit I desire. Is time consuming but it works for me many many years.

When it says "closed" it means when the ring is in the cylinder bore and not in the sprung open position it would be out of the Cylinder.. To measure it, place the ring in the cylinder at the unworn part right at the top and then measure the gap in the Ring, that will tell you how much the Ring is worn. Then move the Ring down the Cylinder to the worn part and measure it again, you can then tell how much the Cylinder is worn. Very often a new set of Rings will cure the problem. If the cylinders are bad you will usually get a "lip" on the thrust side of the cylinder wall and you can feel this with your finger nail. Don't turn the crankshaft and pistons unless you fit spacers and washers on the head studs to prevent the Cylinder Liners from moving, if you neglect to do this you will need to replace the gaskets the Cylinder Liners sit on in the block at the bottom end.
