TEA20 new owner-repairs?

Hello Guys, I am the proud new owner of my first Fergy (3 days now), first tractor actually, and love this site for info. and knowledge. I want to get off on the right foot with my baby so was hoping to seek some knowledge from you buffs. I have already found the vintage (1955), through web pages linked to here but think I have a problem coming if I don't do something now! It is;
The oil on the PTO/Hydrolics dip stick is a creamy/white colour (guessing there is water in there?) I am going to dump and replace it on the weekend (first fiddle, can't wait) and not sure which grade of oil to replace with, guessing 90 or 140?? Also how much does it need/hold?
Also the problem with the water getting in. Where are likly spots it could be coming from?? The PTO shaft is leaking the creamy/white fluid aswell, Is the seal stuffed?? Have seen a previous notice on a "TO35 replacing the seal", is this the same process?? Going to dump the engine oil as well just so I know when it was last done although the dip stick there looks o.k. Is there any other things I should take a look at??
Look forward to keeping an eye on this site and hope one day to help someone out with something I have done?? (might be awhile though??)
P.S. I live in Perth, Western Australia so location of good shops in the USA is not too good for me..thanks anyway.

Kevin, Welcome to FergieWorld. Believe it or not, the water in your rearend/hydraulic section probably came from condensation. It's one of the things you have to watch. You get to change that lube from time to time. 80w90 gear lube is what I use. It works fine and is the closest thing you can find to the original stuff.
Here's a technique I use for cleaning out the rearend. Get an insecticide sprayer. Put a gallon of kerosene in it with a pint of rubbing alcohol. The alcohol mixes with the kerosene and will attract the water. Drain the rearend. There are three plugs underneath. One under the transmission. One at the hydraulic pump and one under the gearcase in back. Take the inspection cover off the right side, the one with the dip stick. Pump up you sprayer and hose down every thing in there. Let that drain, put your new gear lube in and you should be good to go. Put the drain plugs back in or it makes a mess on the floor and wastes good gear lube.
If you don't do something like this, you won't get all the water out and you'll be doing this routine again real soon.

Hi Kevin,
Welcome to your new life style. I find that after a hard day, going out to my fergie and just tinkering with it is a wonderful way to unwind.
Of course you're right about it being water in the oil. I believe the 90 should be adequate. The reason it's also coming out the PTO is because it all shares a common reservoir. In fact it holds 24 quarts of it. I would recommend a thorough cleaning in there before re-filling it.
Even though I haven't had to replace mine, the PTO shaft should come right out after removing the four bolts around it. Then you can replace the seal.. It would be a great time to replace it while the tranny oil is out, so it won't come pouring out when you yank the shaft. By the way, your PTO shaft is probably 1 1/8" in diameter. Since most PTO driven implements are 1 3/8", you might consider replacing the entire shaft with the larger diameter. Makes it much easier and stonger when hooking up a mower. They cost about $100.00 U.S. and comes with the new seal. I don't know for sure, but the water may have entered from the cover under the seat. Do you have heavy rains in Perth? Has it been exposed to the elements?
Us Yanks have been recieving quite an education about Australia in the news because of the Olympics. For example, I thought all of you Aussies drank Fosters, but apparantely, that's not true. :-) It is definitely a country a I would love to visit some day.

Thank's for the tip regarding the oiling of
fergy's back end. I to am a new owner of this
apparent legend and have already fallen in love with it! However the compliance plate is
missing and do not know whether it is a TE20
or a TO20. Is there any way of finding out?
You are quite right, NObody drink's Fosters
in Australia. One of the best beer's made here
