Steering box seals leaking

On my 1948 TE 20, s.n. 28383, the seals are leaking badly where the arms exit the steering box. I'm a little skeptical about trying the replacement myself. Perhaps someone of you has experience with this job and could give me (us) a little advise?

I filled mine with grease rather than go through all that mess of removing.. Grease works a treat just drill a hole of proper size in the filler cap install a grease zerk, hook up a grease gun and fill it up. Its that simple...

Thanks, John.
I have rec"d. an email describing how to do this by removing the casting projection ("tit") on the arm with a grinder, thus allowing the seals to transverse the arm. This method enables seal r & r without removing the whole steering box.

Yes I saw that too, it's fine and it works. It's as Jim says though, depends on how original you want to keep the tractor because it does spoil it but if it is a proper working tractor then go ahead by all means, it's just a short cut for an otherwise time consuming job.....John

One more general question: How does one drain the oil from the steering box?

To do it properly you have to remove the steering box from the tractor....But you can suck the oil out through the oil filler below the steering wheel.

The steering box has to come off the tractor, and then you can access the insides from underneath, which in turn allows you to pull out the arms, so you can r&r the seals. (Problem being you can't get them past the little bump at the bend in the arms.) It happens to be very convenient that the entire assembly will stand upside down on the steering wheel for this operation, however, oil does leak out around the steering column...
An alternative is to grind off the little bump, if you arn't concerned with originality, at which point I have heard that it becomes possible to replace the seals with the arms in situ.
