Recently, when placing my fergy in gear, I get a grind and and it is a little difficult to get in gear. Of course, I back off when I hear the grind, lower the throttle and slowly nurse it into gear. I looked in my manual and it shows the "play" to be a recommended 3/16". Mine has 3/4" play from the upper stop until it reaches travel. The bolt/nut holding the arm is pretty frozen and I"m hesitant to force it unless YOU FOLKS think an adjustment is what I need. Certainly seems worth trying as I also see replacing the clutch requires a complete split. Thanks for you input---Mike

I think that you will find that the pedal clearance should be 3/8", if you are using the IT&T service manual it is a misprint, look at the drawing it give the measurement there. The TE20 is 3/8" on the pedal too. It is highly likely that oil on the plate is your problem, 3/4" on the pedal clearance doesn't usually cause that trouble unless the clutch levers are worn. You may be able to burn it off if it isn't too bad by slipping the clutch, but if it is soaked right in and there is an oil leak under the clutch showing there is an excess of oil in there, you will be wasting your time as there will be no easy way to do it, other than changing the plate.

Mike, adjusting your pedal clearance is the logical 1st step. Use lots of penetrating oil and some heat on the frozen bolt. If you happen to snap the bolt, it should be easy enough to replace. I think it is just a run of the mill machine bolt.

I've adjusted my clutch pedal before, it can be done with 2 hands... but 3 hands would be easier. If you can find, or make, a 3/16" shim to stick between the pedal and the stop, that would be easier than trying to measure 3/16" gap, hold the pedal in place, and tighten down the clamp bolt all at the same time.
